14-5 Win By Baseball At ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford College baseball team won 14-5 over East Tennessee State at Thomas Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at four when the Terriers scored six runs in the sixth inning to break the game open. With the temperature near 90 degrees, the Wofford bats heated up as well for a season-high five home runs among the 15 hits in the game.
                    
Wofford is 23-20 on the season and 8-6 in the Southern Conference. ETSU is 20-21 overall and 3-11 in league play. The weekend series is tied at one game each, with the deciding game on Sunday. The Terriers were led by Brett Hash with four hits and four runs scored, while Cody Miller and Carson Waln added two home runs and four RBIs each. The Bucs had three players with two hits each and Aaron Maher had two RBIs.
 
With two outs in the top of the first, Brett Hash singled and Carson Waln hit his second home run of the series over the wall in left field for a 2-0 lead. The Bucs got one run back in the bottom of the first when Hagen Owenby hit a solo home run with two outs to make it a 2-1 game. Wofford led off the second inning with singles from Reed Massey and Max McDougald. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, but both runners were stranded.
 
In the bottom of the second, a single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. With one out and the runner at third, an error allowed a batter to reach second and a run scored to tie the game at 2-2. A single with two outs drove in an unearned run for a 3-2 lead and two runners were left on base. The Terriers had one out in the top of the third when Brett Hash singled and then Carson Waln hit his second homer of the day. Wofford took a 4-3 lead on his fifth home run of the season. The Bucs were retired in order to end the third inning.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. Kody Ruedisili was hit by a pitch to open the fifth inning. Brett Hash singled with one out, but a double play ended the top half. The Bucs led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and a fielder's choice. A stolen base and error on the throw gave ETSU a runner on third with one out. A ground out tied the game at 4-4 and the Bucs left two runners on base to end the fifth inning.
 
Mack Nathanson doubled to open the sixth inning and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A single up the middle by Max McDougald drove in Nathanson as the Terriers regained the lead at 5-4. Cody Miller then put a ball over the fence in left field to take a 7-4 lead. It was Miller's seventh home run of the second and the third of the game for Wofford. Alex Malsch reached on an error and Kody Ruedisili walked, while a ground out advanced the runners. Brett Hash then cleared the wall just to the left of the batters eye in center field for his tenth home run of the season to give Wofford a 10-4 lead.
 
The Bucs led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, which was followed by a double play and strikeout to end the inning. Reed Massey singled with one out in the top of the seventh and he stole second. With two outs, Cody Miller hit his second home run of the day and Wofford had a 12-4 advantage. It was his eighth home run this season and gave Wofford a season-high five home runs in a game. The five home runs are tied for the eighth most in a single game in school history.
 
A solo home run by Aaron Maher with two outs in the bottom of the seventh made it a 12-5 game. The Bucs added two more singles before a strikeout ended the inning. In the top of the eighth, Kody Ruedisili walked and Brett Hash was hit by a pitch. A single with two outs by Mack Nathanson drove in a run for a 13-5 lead and a double by Reed Massey made it 14-5. The Bucs opened the bottom of the eighth with a single and with one out added another single, but both runners were stranded.
In the top of the ninth inning, a walk was followed by a double play to end the Wofford half. The Bucs left one runner on base at the end of the game.
 
Spencer Kulman (8-3) started for the Terriers and threw seven innings with five runs allowed on nine hits. He struck out five batters and issued a pair of walks as he now leads the Southern Conference in wins with eight. Cole Bradley did not allow a run on two hits in the eighth inning. Elliot Lance threw the ninth and did not allow a hit.
 
ETSU starter Blake Smith (3-6) went 5.2 innings with ten runs allowed on eleven hits, along with six strikeouts. Drew Korzybski threw 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on a pair of hits. Matt Turner worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on one hit. Russell Koesters went the final one and a third with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
Wofford will conclude the three game series at ETSU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Next Wednesday, Wofford will travel to Columbia to face South Carolina. The Terriers only have two home dates remaining, a single game on May 12 and a doubleheader on May 14, against Mercer.
