Baseball Drops 8-1 Decision To VMI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 8-1 by VMI at Russell C. King Field. The Keydets scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings for the lead and limited the Terriers to one run on four hits in the game.
                    
Wofford is 16-16 on the season and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. VMI is 17-15 overall and 4-4 in the league. Cody Miller led the Terriers with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Collin Fleischer had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Keydets, who had nine hits in the game.   
 
With one out in the top of the first, a walk was followed by a double to give the Keydets a 1-0 lead. They added a single, but a double play ended the top half. The Terriers began the bottom of the first with a walk by Brett Rodriguez. A double play and fly ball ended the first inning. Both teams were retired in order in the second inning.
 
The Keydets added two runs in the top of the third inning when a single was followed by a home run by Collin Fleischer for a 3-0 lead. A solo home run by Tyler Tharp made it 4-0 in the middle of the third. Wofford went in order to end the third inning. In the top of the fourth, VMI had runners on the corners with two outs after a single and a walk. A single by Collin Fleischer drove in a run for a 5-0 lead and a walk loaded the bases. Another walk plated a run and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded made it 7-0 before a fly ball ended the top half.
 
Brett Hash walked with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but was stranded. After the Keydets were retired in order, Cody Miller led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left center. It was his fifth home run of the season and made it a 7-1 game. Wofford added a hit by Alex Malsch, but he was stranded at second to end the fifth inning.
 
In the top of the sixth, VMI led off with a double but the runner was left on third to end the top half. Brett Hash singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Keydets left one on base in the top of the seventh. Wofford was retired in order to end the seventh and VMI went in order in the top of the eighth.
 
Alex Malsch led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, but then the Keydets turned a double play. Dylan May drew a pinch hit walk before a fly ball ended the eighth inning. VMI opened the ninth with back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and a wild pitch plated a run for an 8-1 score. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Alec Cargin had a pinch hit double. A ground out ended the game.
 
Spencer Kulman (6-2) started for the Terriers and allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. David Ehmen faced two batters. Reece Maniscalco worked three innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Merritt Huber did not allow a hit in one and a third innings. Jordan Accetta walked two batters and allowed one run. Quintin Pile went an inning with a strikeout.
 
Matthew Eagle (3-1) was the Keydets starter and went six innings with one run allowed on three hits, along with six strikeouts. Zak Kent worked two innings without allowing a hit. Derek Tremblay threw the ninth and allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
 
Wofford will conclude the three game series against VMI on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday and then begin a Southern Conference road series at UNCG on Thursday.
