Baseball Takes Series At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a 4-2 win over The Citadel at Riley Park. The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the first inning and were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Terriers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning and added a run in the eighth inning to earn the game and series wins.
                    
Wofford is 28-28 on the season and 13-11 in the Southern Conference. It marks just the second winning record for the Terriers in league play (13-10 in 2015), while it is the third straight at or above .500. The Citadel is 16-34 overall and 7-17 in league play. The Terriers had two hits each by Kody Ruedisili and Stone Pellegrino, with Pellegrino and Max McDougald having RBIs. The Bulldogs had ten hits in the game and left seven runners on base.
 
Kody Ruedisili walked to open the game and was stranded at second base in the middle of the first. The Bulldogs led off the bottom half with a single, which was followed by a double play. They added a single and a ground rule double. A throwing error on an infield hit allowed both runners to score for a 2-0 lead. The next batter doubled, but the lead runner was out at home to end the first inning.
 
In the top of the second, Brett Rodriguez walked and was picked off first. The Bulldogs left a runner on second after a walk and sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the top of the third, Kody Ruedisili walked and a single by McClain Bradley gave the Terriers runners on the corners. An attempted double steal allowed Ruedisili to score and Bradley was out for a 2-1 game. The bottom of the third began with a single, but the runner was out at third trying to advance on a wild pitch. A walk and line out ended the third inning.
 
Brett Hash was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning and Mack Nathanson followed with a single. With one out, a single by Stone Pellegrino drove in Hash to tie the game at 2-2. A single through the right side by Max McDougald added a run for a 3-2 lead, but the Terriers left two on base in the middle of the frame. The Bulldogs had a single to lead off the bottom of the fourth and the runner stole second. A single with one out gave The Citadel runners on the corners, however a strikeout and fly ball ended the fourth inning.
 
The fifth inning began with a single by Kody Ruedisili, but he was stranded at third base. With two outs in the bottom half, a dropped fly ball resulted in a runner at second. After stealing third, the runner was stranded on a fly ball to end the inning. Brett Rodriguez and Stone Pellegrino led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. They moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but a pop up and ground out ended the top half with the runners stranded. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the sixth inning.
 
Kody Ruedisili drew his third walk of the game to lead off the seventh inning. After a fielder's choice, Brett Hash was hit by a pitch. The Terriers had runners at second and third when a strikeout ended the top half. The Citadel singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and the runner moved to second on a wild pitch. A pop up and fly ball stranded the runner at the end of the seventh inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Alec Cargin singled and Alex Malsch walked. Kody Ruedisili had an infield single and a throwing error on the play allowed a run to score to make it 4-2 in the middle of the eighth. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the eighth inning. Wofford had one runner left on base in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs had a single with one out. A diving catch by Alex Malsch and a throw to first completed the double play to end the game.
 
Wofford starter Chris Sheehan (4-2) threw five innings and allowed two unearned runs on seven hits, while striking out four. Matt Ellmyer went three innings with and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco earned his second save by allowing one hit in the ninth.
 
Will Pillsbury (1-7) started for the Bulldogs and went 3.1 innings with three runs allowed on three hits, along with three strikeouts. Kyle Smith did not allow a run on four hits in 2.2 innings. Thomas Byelick worked two innings with one run allowed on two hits and two strikeouts. Jordan Buster did not allow a hit in an inning with one strikeout.
 
The Southern Conference Tournament begins for Wofford on Wednesday, May 24 at Fluor Field in Greenville. The Terriers will be the #5 seed and play #4 Furman at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
