Baseball Drops Decision At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-3 by Winthrop at Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles scored three runs in the second inning and the Terriers scored three in the sixth to tie the game. Winthrop scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Wofford left two runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth to end the game.
                    
Wofford is 25-24 on the season and Winthrop is 27-18 overall. Winthrop won both meeting between the teams this year. The Terriers were led by Max McDougald with two hits and Mack Nathanson with a pair of RBIs. Anthony Paulsen and Brandon Fite had two hits each for the Eagles.
 
Kody Ruedisili started the game with a double down the left field line, but was unable to advance. The Eagles led off the bottom of the first, but the runner was caught stealing second. Max McDougald added a single with two outs in the top of the second for the Terriers. Winthrop had two outs and runners on second and third when a wild pitch scored a run. Back-to-back singles drove in runs to make it a 3-0 game.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the third inning. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth inning after a walk and fielder's choice. The Eagles went in order to end the fourth frame. Cody Miller doubled with one out in the top of the fifth, but was stranded at third base. After the Eagles went in order to end the fifth inning, McClain Bradley led off the sixth with a double. Brett Hash walked and a double steal put runners in scoring position. A double just past the third baseman by Mack Nathanson scored both runners to cut the lead to 3-2. Nathanson stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reed Massey to tie the game.
 
The Eagles led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, but the runner was caught stealing second. They left one runner on base after a walk to end the inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning. Winthrop had a single with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the frame.
 
Wofford went in order in the top of the eighth and with one out in the bottom half, an Eagle was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles plated a run to give Winthrop a 4-3 lead. A pair of strikeouts ended the eighth with two runners left on base. With one out in the top of the ninth, Max McDougald walked. Andrew Orzel entered as a pinch runner and stole second base and third base. Cody Miller walked, but a fielder's choice got the lead runner out at home plate. A fly ball ended the game with a 4-3 score.
 
Elliot Lance started and went 1.2 innings with three runs allowed on three hits, along with two strikeouts. David Ehmen threw a third of an inning with one hit allowed. Jake Hirshman (1-1) was on the mound for a season-long 5.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
 
Eagles' starter Thad Harris went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out two. Zach Peek (4-1) threw 3.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits and three strikeouts. Dalton Whitaker earned the save (7) by going the final two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
 
Wofford will travel to USC Upstate on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to complete the non-conference schedule for the season. The Terriers only have two home dates remaining, a single game on May 12 and a doubleheader on May 14, against Mercer.
