Spartanburg, S.C. - Head Coach,
Ralph Polson and his young Terriers squad is getting set for a tough opening weekend to the 2017 season. Over the weekend Wofford will host Cal State Fullerton University and Radford University who reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and 2015. Cal State Fullerton finished as runner-up in the Big West Tournament in 2016 after reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
Coach Polson referenced this as an opportunity to gage the preseason progress of the Terriers against great competition. "We are really excited to have an opportunity to compete against two great soccer programs to start the season. It will be a good test for our young players to face competition like this on our opening weekend. These are the toughest opponents we have opened the season with since in my tenure and we look forward to the challenge."
Radford will be the first test for the Terriers on Friday, August 25 at 7:00 pm at Snyder Field. Radford finished the 2016 season 14-4-2 and 7-1 in the Big South leading to a Big South Tournament Championship. The Highlanders lost their opening round NCAA Tournament game 2-1 at Coastal Carolina to end their season.
Radford was picked to repeat as Big South champions and returning senior Fraser Colmer was named Co-Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Highlanders also return 21 players from the 2016 squad, which include seven starters from the 2016 team.
The Terriers will then host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, August 27 at 11:00 am. The Titans look to build off of a 2016 campaign that ended in the Big West Conference Tournament Finals after losing to CSU Northridge. After a bid to the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Tournaments, the Titans fell one win short of getting back to postseason play for the third consecutive year.
The Titans return their second leading point getters from 2016 in Ross McPhie and Robert Coronado who both finished with 8 points on the season. Cal State Fullerton was picked to finish second in the Big West according to the coach's pre-season poll.
The Terriers will conclude preseason practice on Thursday in anticipation for the season opener on Friday night at 7:00 pm.
