Terriers Fall 3-2 in Season Opener

George Washington Wins in Five

Box Score KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team won the first two set of the season opener against George Washington, but couldn't hold off a furious Colonial comeback and fell 3-2 in the first game of the Tennessee Classic. The Terriers won the first two sets 30-28 and 26-24 but fell 25-22, 25-17 and 15-5 in the next three, respectively. Wofford falls to 0-1 on the season and George Washington starts off the season 1-0.

Sophomore Catie Cronister led Wofford with 16 kills. She also tied a career high with five aces, many coming at crucial times to either keep the momentum or swing it Wofford's way. Kara Shacklette, also a sophomore, hit an impressive .542, contributing 13 kills with zero errors on 24 swings. Transfer libero Taylor Gill earned the start and led the defensive effort from the back row, tallying a team high 27 digs while adding six assists. Lorissa King paced the offensive attack with 35 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double performance.

As a team, Wofford hit .138 over five sets while George Washington hit .248. The teams had nearly identical numbers from the serving line, as Wofford had nine aces and 12 reception errors, while the Colonials also had nine aces to 11 errors.

The Terriers and Colonials traded points throughout the entire first set, as neither team led by more than three points at any time. The teams were all square at 25 and traded points to 28 when the Colonials committed costly errors, first with a service error and then with an attack error to give Wofford the first set, 30-28.

George Washington led most of the second set, though close, until Wofford took the lead at 23-22. The Colonials tied it at 24. A Cronister ace and a George Washington hitting error again gave the last two points to Wofford and the Terriers won 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead. The Terriers trailed by five points three times in the set, but rallied down the stretch.

George Washington jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third set. Wofford slowly cut into the lead and tied it at 10 and the teams were evenly matched throughout the rest of the set. Wofford trailed 16-20 and rattled off three straight to pull within one at 20-19, but the Colonials followed with a three point run of their own to extend the lead and didn't look back, taking the set 25-22.

Wofford, again, got down early in the fourth set. The Terriers took a timeout down 12-7 but it didn't slow down the Colonials' offensive attack and they led by atleast seven points for the rest of the set, ultimately winning 25-17.

In the fifth set, George Washington's momentum was too much to overcome. Wofford took the opening point and wouldn't lead again the rest of the set, falling 15-5.
