Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 after Early Red Card

Lynchburg, Va. – The Wofford men's soccer team lost 3-1 at Liberty University on Saturday evening. The Terriers opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the first half but Liberty tied the game and then a red card sealed Wofford's fate as the Flames went on to win 3-1. With the loss the Terriers drop to 0-8 as they conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Wofford took its first lead of the season in the 22nd minute when Lucas Altman linked up with Austin Tuggle for the Terrier goal. Liberty found the equalizer in the 29th minute when Kevin Mendoza converted on a penalty kick from the circle.

Just over twenty seconds later Wofford was shown a red card from the head referee and were forced to play down a man for the remaining 59 minutes of the match.

Two minutes later in the 31st minute the Flames took the lead when Alex Dominguez connected with Pepe Segarra, sending the game into the half Liberty 2 – Wofford 1.

Although the Terriers were down a man for over 59 minutes, the team continued to generate offensive opportunities on the counter attack but Wofford was unable to capitalize on two early corner kicks. In the 74th minute Liberty scored the dagger when Bobby Bynum headed a cross from Alex Dominguez into the back of the net.

Despite the loss Wofford totaled nine shots and five shots on goal. Austin Tuggle's goal was his first of the season and Lucas Altman picks up his first assist of the season.

Wofford will begin its Southern Conference schedule on Tuesday evening when the Terriers host Mercer at Snyder Field at 7PM.
