SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team picked up its first win in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium with a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel on Wednesday night. With the win, Wofford improves to 11-6 on the season and 2-2 in Southern Conference play, while The Citadel falls to 6-13 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Â
Wofford won the first set 25-20 and won the second set 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Wofford took the third set, convincingly, 25-15. The Terriers never trailed the entire match.
Â
"I'm really proud of our team tonight," said head coach
Lynze Roos. "We challenged them to control the match behind the service line and we delivered with strong serving. Our goal was to keep them out of their system because when they are able to run their offense, they are dangerous. They have some strong attackers, so we had to pressure them on first contact. I was really pleased to see our block setup improve and I felt that we had good control in our transition game."
Â
The Terriers hit .286 in the match and held the Bulldogs to a hitting percentage of just .044.
Â
Catie Cronister led Wofford with 12 kills. Cronister, who leads the SoCon in kills per set, has double digit kills in all but two matches this season, both of which she only played two sets or less. The sophomore surpassed 250 kills on the season in the win. Cronister hit .360 and had just three attack errors on 25 swings. She added six digs and three service aces. Entering the match, Cronister was tied for the nation's lead in service aces with 35, and the outside hitter now has 38 on the season.
Â
Colleen Reilly and
Bijonae Jones followed with nine kills. Reilly hit .500 with just two errors and added three blocks. In the win, she passed the 100 kill mark this season. Jones also had 14 digs and two blocks to contribute on the defensive end.
Kara Shacklette had six kills and no errors and hit .500 in the match.
Â
Lorissa King led all players with 22 assists. The sophomore setter added on eight digs. Freshman
Kristen Seibert tallied 10 assists.
Taylor Gill had nine digs and six assists in a solid showing.
Â
Wofford held Moriah Smith, a preseason All-SoCon pick and one of the strongest attackers in the conference, to just three kills and a .045 hitting percentage.
Â
As the only school to have played four conference matches, the Terriers enjoy six days off from competition. Wofford returns to the court Tuesday, Oct. 3 in a non-conference showdown with Presbyterian College.Â
