Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short

 
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 66-51 on Thursday evening at UNCG. Despite leading 47-46 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Terriers could not handle the length of the Spartans who converted 26 second chance points on 26 offensive rebounds en route to the win.  With the loss, Wofford falls to 7-10 on the season and 1-2 in the Southern Conference.
 
The Terriers took an early 2-0 lead thanks to Marissa Bayer's bucket inside the paint but the Spartans responded with a Nadine Soliman long ball. A three from Cairo Booker ended a 4-0 Spartan run to cut the deficit to 2 with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter. UNCG continued to play solid defense holding Wofford to just five points over the first five minutes. The Spartans led 12-5 at the first media timeout thanks to seven early points from Soliman. Out of the break, Wofford went on a 6-0 run to again cut the Spartan lead to 1, 12-11. Soliman ended the Wofford run with another three pointer, giving her 11 in the first period. As a team, Wofford shot just 5-16 (31%) in the first quarter while UNCG shot just 6-17 (35%) but 3-4 from downtown and 4-4 from the line.
 
The Spartans opened the second quarter on a 9-4 run behind two buckets from Ije Ajemba stretching their lead to 12, 29-17 with just over four minutes to play in the second quarter. After a scoreless stretch for both teams, Cairo Booker hit a jumper to pull Wofford within 10. UNCG attempted to pull away from the Terriers but Wofford's defense held the Spartans to just 4-13 (30%) allowing the Terriers to remain within striking distance as UNCG led 32-23 at the halftime break. Soliman led the Spartans with 14 points and four rebounds at the half while Ije Ajemba scored eight points while grabbing eight rebounds. Cairo Booker paced the Terriers after two quarters with seven points, four rebounds and two assists while Da'Ja Green and Marissa Bayer both added six points.
 
Out of the break, Ajemba continued her strong play as she converted on a three-point play to extend the Spartan lead to 12 at 35-23. UNCG stretched the lead to 15 points, thanks to eight second chance points in the first five minutes of the quarter. Wofford continued to hang tough, ending the quarter on a 16-4 run to cut the Spartan lead to one at the end of three quarters. During the run Jamari McDavid scored 12 points while going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. McDavid led the Terriers after three periods of play with 12 points and one board while Cairo Booker had 11 points, four boards and two assists.
 
Wofford scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter and the Terriers took their first lead since Wofford led 2-0 to begin the game. After Wofford held her in check for the second and third quarter, Soliman knocked down another huge three to vault the Spartans back into the lead at 49-47. UNCG used the three to spark a 13-2 run, regaining the lead, 59-49 at the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Aneka Yelverton knocked down a three-pointer to increase the lead to 13 and essentially end Wofford's comeback chances.
 
Despite the loss, Wofford had two players reach double figures in Jamari McDavid (14) and Cairo Booker (13). As a team Wofford shot just 19-59 (32%) in the game and 2-17 (11%) in the fourth quarter. The Spartans shot just 21-68 (30%) from the floor but 7-16 (43%) in the fourth quarter. UNCG outrebounded Wofford 57-31 while grabbing 26 offensive boards for 26 second chance points. The Spartans had four players reach double figures in Te'Ja Twitty (10), Aneka Yelverton (13), Nadine Soliman (17) and Ije Ajemba (17).
 
Wofford will return to the court on Saturday when the Terriers travel to Cullowhee to face off against Western Carolina at 5 PM. After Saturday's conference clash, it will be a quick turnaround for the Terriers who will return to action on Monday for the final non-conference matchup of the season against Brevard at 6 PM.
