Women's Basketball Falls Just Short at Home

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 61-58 to ETSU on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Indoor Stadium. Despite trailing at the half, the Buccaneers completed the second half comeback thanks to 12 second half points from Tianna Tarter. The loss is Wofford's second in a row and moves the Terriers to 9-12 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference.

It was a slow start to the first quarter for both teams as the Terriers and Bucs combined for just eight points in the first five and a half minutes. The squads continued to battle it out in the remaining minutes of the first quarter with both teams struggling from the floor. Despite the cold start, the Bucs held a 12-11 lead at the end of one quarter thanks to three-pointers from Alayjah Sherer and Shy Copney. Wofford shot just 4-17 (23%) in the first quarter as Hannah Morgan paced the Terriers with three points in five minutes.

The pace picked up in the second quarter as ETSU extended the lead to four in the first two minutes. Wofford then ripped off a 14-9 run to end the quarter that was capped off by Jamari McDavid who knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute. The Terriers shot 8-29 (27%) from the field in the first quarter but went 3-7 (42%) from downtown, allowing Wofford to hold a one point lead at the half. Cairo Booker stuffed the stat sheet for the Terriers in the first two quarters recording nine points, seven boards, an assist, a block and two steals.

ETSU flexed its muscle out of the halftime break, going on an 11-6 run prior to the first media timeout to reclaim the lead at 36-32. After being shutout in the first half, Tianna Tarter scored five points in the run including a jumper from distance. The Bucs came out of the timeout with another 6-2 run to extend the lead to eight with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. Despite the explosion from the Bucs, Wofford hung tough putting together a 7-3 run to end the quarter. Booker led the Terriers with 13 points and nine boards while playing all 30 minutes as Wofford trailed 45-40 at the end of three periods.

The young Terriers continued the fight in the fourth quarter, stringing together a 7-2 run to cut the Buccaneer lead to 47-45 at the first media timeout. ETSU remained calm throughout the Wofford run, responding with a 10-6 stretch to extend the lead back to six with two minutes remaining in the game. The excitement continued as the Terriers cut the ETSU lead to 57-56 after Emily Ryan knocked down a huge three-pointer with just over a minute to play. Tarter took control in the final minute of play for the Bucs knocking down four clutch free throws to ice the game and end Wofford's chances.

Despite the loss, Wofford shot 23-59 (39%) while forcing the Bucs into 12 turnovers. Wofford was led by Cairo Booker who finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 boards. She added three assists, two steals and one block. Jamari McDavid and Da'Ja Green both finished with 12 points as Green dished out five assists and grabbed six boards.

Wofford will return to the court after a week hiatus on Saturday, January 27 when the Terriers host Furman at 2 PM at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
