BURLINGTON, N.C. - Led by
Walker Simas' fourth-place finish, the Wofford men's golf team completed competition in the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday, placing ninth overall as a team.
The tournament host, Elon, paced the field of 16 teams by shooting 9-under-par 843 to win the event. Ohio placed second overall with a total score of 848 for the three rounds, while Temple was third, posting a 3-under-par 849.
As a team, the Terriers opened with a 279, placing them just two shots back of the lead before a second-round score of 291. On Tuesday, Wofford finished with a solid 286 to secure ninth place overall.
"We struggled as a team," said Wofford head coach
Alex Hamilton. "We had some decent stretches but could not consistently put the ball in a position to score. We'll be looking for more consistency next week at South Alabama."
Simas came out firing in round one, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to open up the Invitational. The junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, finished Monday with a 2-under-par 70 before capping off the tournament with a 69 to finish a 7-under-par 206, just three shots back of tournament-winner Elon Harwood who finished 10-under-par.
"I'm proud of Walker (Simas) this week," Hamilton said. "He played a very solid three rounds and gave himself an opportunity to win on the back nine."
Freshman
Walker Jones stayed consistent for the Terriers, shooting a 2-under-par 70 in round two, opening and closing the Invitational with a pair of 73's to tie for 30th. Sophomore
Matt Teaster was plus five for the tournament, finishing with his best round of 71 on Tuesday.
Fellow sophomore
Nick Willis struggled in round two, but posted a 73 in the third and final round to cap off the tournament 8-over-par.
Ole Martin Davanger also finished with a 221 overall after an opening-round 68.
Wofford returns to the course on October 27, competing in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
