Men's Soccer Drops Road Contest at No. 23 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team fell to No. 23 Duke, 4-2, Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium. Three goals by Duke in the second half would seal the deal for the Blue Devils as the loss drops Wofford to 1-7-1 overall on the season.

Wofford struck first blood in the 10th minute as Saviour Anyagri sent a cross from the far right wing, finding Zach Aversano for a close shot that lifted just over the keeper's head to take the 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils responded shortly after in the 17th minute with the equalizer by Duke's Brandon Williamson. The Terriers would remain on the defensive for the duration of the first half, though they forced Duke to take difficult shots, holding the score at 1-1 going into the intermission.

Duke outshot Wofford, 15-3, and took nine corner kicks in the first half.

The Blue Devils came out the intermission finding their second goal of the night in the 49th minute to take the lead, 2-0. Duke poured in another goal in the 57th minute as a Blue Devil would finish the rebound off a Shane Berson block on the initial shot, extending the lead to 3-1. The Blue Devils continued their attack, eventually scoring their fourth and last goal of the night in the 76th minute. Shortly after, Wofford's Lucas Altman was granted a penalty kick after a foul in the box, though, Duke goalkeeper Michael Reis was able to make the save to keep the score at 4-1. However, the Terriers continued to show fight, scoring their second goal in the 87th minute as Dean Sinatra was able to find the left corner of the goal off the helper from Connor Donohue. Duke would go on to finish out the remaining three minutes in control, earning the 4-2 win at the end of regulation.

The Blue Devils took the shot advantage for the match, 28-6, while also taking the corner kick advantage, 14-2.

Zach Aversano and Dean Sinatra both scored their first goals of the season in the match, while Saviour Anyagri and Connor Donohue added assists on the night to respectively make it their first and second of the year. Ethan Willie led the Terriers in shots taken, with two, while Aversano, Sinatra, Lucas Altman, and Walt Stevens all took one shot each.

Despite the loss, Shane Berson recorded three saves in the match.

Next, The Terriers return to the pitch on Saturday, October 6, hosting ETSU for a 7 p.m. SoCon matchup at Snyder Field.
