Late Donohue Goal Propels Men's Soccer Past USC Upstate in Regular Season Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team came out victorious on a chilly Senior Night, prevailing against USC Upstate, 2-1, on Saturday behind Connor Donohue's third game-winning goal of the season. Wofford finishes the regular season with a 5-10-1 overall record and a 3-3 mark in SoCon play.

The Terriers struck first blood in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in just the eighth minute of play. USC Upstate's keeper would block Rocky Antwi's header, off a Zach Aversano corner, as Ben Nickol found himself in positon for an easy chip in to take the early lead. The Spartans came back down the field finding the equalizer in the 15th minute as Joel Bunting would follow up on his own shot, which Shane Berson initially saved, to net one in from inside the box. Both teams went on to play steady for the duration of the half, with Shane Berson grabbing three saves to send the game tied at 1-1 heading into the intermission.

Both squads came out the halftime period eager to find the tiebreaker. USC Upstate would find themselves on the attack for a majority of the period, however, Wofford had several close scoring opportunities to take the lead. Ben Nickol was able to get good position for a header on goal, in the 55th minute, though, USC Upstate's keeper Andreas Bonavia was there to make the close save. Shortly after, Lucas Altman would find a pair of shot opportunities from the top of the box, but would unfortunately sail both high to keep the score stagnant. The Spartans made a late push, firing up several shots, though Shane Berson would corral four more saves to push the game into overtime at the end of regulation.

The Terriers almost secured the tiebreaker in the first overtime, as Brett Goodman connected for a header that rolled just past the left post of the goal in the 92nd minute. Wofford would then not allow USC Upstate a single shot in the period, sending the game into double overtime at the end of the 10-minute period.

Surpassing 100 minutes of play, Wofford was able to create advantages on good ball movement from the Terriers' defensive line. Eventually, Connor Donohue would be on the receiving end of a pass for a one-on-one situation between him and USC Upstate's keeper Andrea Bonavia. From the left side of the box, Donohue would laser a shot bottom right that rolled past Bonavia to give the Terriers the 2-1 win in the 104th minute.

Donohue added his sixth goal of the year in the win, while Ben Nickol scored his first of the season in the match. Zach Aversano and Rocky Antwi were credited with assists, making it their fourth and third of the season respectively.

Shane Berson earned the win, tallying seven saves throughout the match.

The Terriers will now prepare for the 2018 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship, hosting No. 5 seed UNCG, as a No. 4 seed, in the quarterfinals on Saturday, November 3rd for a 6 p.m. kick off at Snyder Field.
