SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 4 seeded Wofford men's soccer team concluded their season Saturday night, dropping a hard-fought match at Snyder Field to No. 5 seed UNCG, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship. An early goal by the Spartans in the first four minutes of play would force the Terriers to play from behind for the duration of the match, as the Terriers end the 2018 season 5-11-1 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Spartans advance to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed Mercer in Johnson City on Friday, November 9.

The Spartans found themselves in Wofford territory early on, managing to send two shots within the first two minutes of play. A Wofford foul by the close right wing would set up UNCG's lone goal of the night on a free kick opportunity in the fourth minute. UNCG's Nelson Oceano sent a free kick into the left side of the box, meeting Josh Masten for a header that fed teammate Jacob Planell for a header of his own to take the 1-0 lead. The Terriers responded seeing a pair of shots from
Ben Nickol and
Ade Akinjogbin, however, the score remained stagnant with both shots from Nickol sailing high and Akinjogbin's being saved.
Dean Sinatra nearly found the equalizer in the 33
rd minute, flicking a header on frame, though, UNCG's Jon Milligan was there for his second save of the half.

The Spartans held on to the 1-0 lead going into halftime, holding a 9-5 edge in shots while Wofford took the corner kick advantage in the first half, 3-2.

UNCG came out the intermission on the offensive, narrowly extending their lead in the 55
th minute on a shot from the top of the box that nicked the left post.
Shane Berson went on to make two crucial saves in the 63
rd and 66
th minute that would go on to set up Wofford's attack on the counter. The Terriers saw a chance to tie the score in the 75
th minute, as
Sam Ross rocketed a shot through traffic from the top-right side of the box that unfortunately met UNCG keeper Jon Milligan for the save. Both teams played stingy on defense going forward, not allowing any easy looks, though, the Terriers began to make a late push around the 88
th minute. With time winding down in the last minute of play, the Terriers found themselves in UNCG territory as
Kyle Nelson fired a shot from inside the box that was unfortunately blocked by a Spartan defender. Amongst the ensuing frenzy for the ball inside the box,
Zach Aversano managed to corral the rebound to fire a last-second shot that Milligan would narrowly bat down with his fingertips to secure the 1-0 win for the Spartans at the end of regulation.

UNCG held the edge over Wofford in shots for the match, 12-10, while the Terriers took the corner kick advantage 5-4.

The Terriers saw efforts from

Ben Nickol with two shots apiece, while
Sam Ross,
Dean Sinatra, and
Kyle Nelson all finished with one shot each.

Shane Berson managed to grab five saves throughout the match.

Wofford ends the 2018 season 5-11-1 overall and 3-3 in the SoCon, as captain senior forward
Connor Donohue led the team in points (16) and goals (6) for the season.
