Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Wofford women's basketball team came up short on Sunday afternoon, losing to Charlotte 85-63 at Halton Arena. The 49ers hot-shooting was too much to handle as Charlotte shot 51 percent (33-65 FG) from the field and 45 percent (9-20 3FG) beyond the arc. The loss moves Wofford to 1-2 overall while Charlotte moves to 2-0.

The first quarter was played tight as both teams traded baskets with the score never exceeding two possessions. The Terriers went back and forth with Charlotte, seeing layups from Cairo Booker, Da'Ja Green, and Jackie Carman. A jumper by Chloe Wanink followed by a MaryMartha Turner layup and 3-pointer would give the Terriers the lead at the end of the first quarter, 23-19.

Wofford continued to play steady with Charlotte, battling point for point on a Marissa Bayer layup and pair of Jamie Grob free throws. Around the 5:17 mark, Charlotte began to pull away on two back-to-back 3-pointers by Jade Phillips and Mariah Linney to take its largest lead of the day at 33-26. A jumper by MaryMartha Turner and layup from Niyah Lutz would bring the score back within two up until the 49ers went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 43-31 with 1:43 left. A free throw and jumper from Jackie Carman and Wanink would send the score into the half at 43-34.

The 49ers never looked back coming out the half, exploding for 24 points while holding to Wofford to 10 in the quarter. The third quarter was highlighted by a Charlotte 11-0 run around the 5:42 mark that gave the 49ers a 20-point lead at 61-41. The fourth quarter was much of the same, though, the Terriers played resilient seeing scores from Jamari McDavid, Jackie Carman, Alexis Tomlin, and Niyah Lutz throughout the frame. However, the 49ers would go on to handle and control the remainder of play to take the 85-63 win at the end of the regulation.

The Terriers shot cold on the day, being held to 36 percent (24-67 FG) shooting from the field and 23 percent (3-13 3FG) from beyond the arc. Charlotte also held the edge in rebounds over the Terriers, 46-33.

10 different Terriers scored on the day as Wofford was led by Chloe Wanink with 14 points (5-17 FG). The Terriers also received efforts from Jackie Carman (nine points, three rebounds), Cairo Booker (eight points, three rebounds), Jamari McDavid (seven points, four rebounds), and MaryMartha Turner (seven points, four rebounds).

Next, Wofford will face Presbyterian on the road again on Friday, November 16 for a 6 p.m. start.
