GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Wofford volleyball team fell in three sets to Mercer in the SoCon quarterfinals on Friday in Greensoboro, North Carolina, ending its 2018 season. The Terriers, who finish season 14-16 (7-9 SoCon), fell to the Bears 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.
Seniors
Alex Holland and
Taylor Gill led the way with eight kills and 11 digs, respectively, while
Lorissa King totaled 13 assists in the match.
The Terriers fell behind 10-8 in the first set, but a
Catie Cronister kill propelled Wofford to take 6-of-8 points to hold a two-point advantage. Mercer, which split its regular season matchup with Wofford, responded by taking the next five points as they looked to close out the Terriers. After a pair of attack errors by the Bears, the score was knotted up at 18-18, but Mercer scored seven unanswered to cap off the first set 25-18.
Set two unfolded much like the first, with Wofford trailing 10-8 before tying the set at 10-10. Mercer looked to pull away, taking a 14-11 advantage but a pair of
Kelly Hubbard kills and a Mercer error tied the score at 14-14. Mercer's Roberta Todd would zap the momentum from Wofford, however, sending home a kill that started a 5-0 run. After trading points, the Bears ultimately closed out the terriers 25-18.
Wofford matched Mercer point-for-point to open the third set, but once again, the turning point came with the score tied at 10 apiece, with the Bears taking six out of the next seven points. Mercer would eventually close out Wofford by taking four of the last five points to advance to the SoCon semifinals on Saturday.
