SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A career-high 14 points from sophomore forward
Keve Aluma highlighted Wofford's 97-46 victory over Mars Hill on Friday afternoon. Wofford scored 32 points off turnovers, with 20 of the 24 turnovers coming via steals, as five players score in double figures for the first time since 2016.
Cameron Jackson recorded his second double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards. Fellow preseason All-SoCon member
Fletcher Magee had 18 points, hitting five 3-pointers for the fourth time this season.
Nathan Hoover scored 17 and
Matthew Pegram totaled 10 points off the bench as Wofford improved to 4-2 on the season.
"These games around Thanksgiving were great for us before our tough three-game stretch ahead," head coach
Mike Young said. "It gave us an opportunity with test out some things and see some different lineups."
With both teams settling into the game, a 3-pointer from Hoover followed by a spinning layup from Pegram gave Wofford an early 14-5 lead. After the teams traded buckets, the Terriers went on a 15-0 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Hoover and Magee to make the score 33-9 in favor of Wofford.
The Terriers continued to produce, as Cam Jackson stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for the slam, making it 47-17 with under four minutes to play in the first half.
Wofford picked up right where it left off to start the second, as
Storm Murphy set up Hoover for a 4-point play and Jackson for a slam, extending the lead to 33 points.
Aluma, who surpassed his previous high of 10 points (Washington & Lee 11/12/2018), kept things going, doing his best Jackson impersonation, stealing the ball and finishing the play with a slam as Wofford held a commanding 59-24 advantage.
"He has in his head what his role is, and he's right, that he's supposed to rebound, defend and facilitate," Young said of Aluma. "But I've had to tell him on a couple of occasions, it's okay for you to be great right now. Everybody's on the same page. He's such a nice kid. He's got great hands and he's an impact player who plays his tail off."
A total of 10 different Terriers scored in the game, with nine players logging 14-plus minutes. As a team, Wofford shot over 50% from the floor for the second-straight game, going 33-66 from the floor (53%) and went 16-for-18 from the free throw line (88%).
The Terriers return to the road on Monday, traveling to Columbia to face South Carolina at 7 p.m. After South Carolina, Wofford hosts ETSU (12/1) and travels to Kansas (12/4).
