GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team was held scoreless for over seven minutes in the first half at Furman and the Terriers couldn't overcome the Paladins' scoring onslaught in the drought as the Terriers fell 76-52 in Timmons Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 17-9 on the season and 8-5 in conference play, while Furman improves to the same record. The teams split the regular season meetings.
Fletcher Magee and
Nathan Hoover led Wofford offensively, each scoring 10 in the loss.
Tray Hollowell netted seven, followed by
Trevor Stumpe with six. Hoover pulled down a career high seven rebounds, while
Cameron Jackson added seven boards of his own.
Donovan Theme-Love came off the bench to lead the team with four assists and didn't allow a turnover in 18 minutes.
Wofford jumped out to an 11-2 lead to start the game and the Paladins took an early timeout. The timeout worked as Furman exploded for a 16-0 run out of the break, holding Wofford scoreless for over seven minutes of action. A jumper by freshman
Tray Hollowell broke the scoring drought with 9:10 to go in the half, but Furman closed the half on a 26-3 run to take 39-21 lead into the locker room.
The Paladins' momentum rolled over into the second half as Furman started off the half on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 25. Two free throws by
Keve Aluma cut the lead back to 19 with 14:33 to go, but again, the Paladins responded to keep Wofford at bay. Furman used a 21-9 run over the next nine minutes to extend the margin to 31, 71-40, with 5:23 left.
Wofford outscored Furman 6-2 in the final two minutes off a free throw by
Dishon Lowery and back-to-back threes from Hollowell and
Bobby Perez, but the Paladins emerged victorious, 76-52.
Furman made 13 threes as a team, the most by a Wofford opponent since The Citadel also made 13 threes in Spartanburg on Jan. 6. The Paladins shot 46% from the field and 40.6% from deep, while holding Wofford to 35.2% from the floor and 304% from long range. Wofford won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Furman 36-36, though Furman capitalized on theirs and outscored Wofford 13-2 on second chance points. The Paladins also scored 13 points off Wofford's 15 turnovers.
Twelve Wofford players saw action and the entire dozen got on the board.
This was the first of three consecutive road games for the Terriers. Next up, the Terriers head to Cullowhee for a showdown with Western Carolina on Thursday, Feb. 15 and then head to Chattanooga Saturday, Feb. 17. Wofford returns home to host UNCG on Feb. 20, plays at ETSU on Feb. 23 and then celebrates senior day and the final regular season game against Mercer on Feb. 25. The game against Mercer, originally scheduled for 7 p.m, has been moved up to a 2 p.m. start.Â
