Baseball Wins 4-2 Over Dayton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored three times in the eighth inning for a 4-2 win over Dayton at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. With the game tied at one after seven innings, the Terriers scored three runs on two hits in the eighth to take the lead. The Flyers scored one run in the top of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate when a fly ball ended the game.
                    
Wofford opens the season 1-2, while Dayton is also 1-2. The Terriers were led by Mack Nathanson with a solo home run and a single that drove in two runs. Colin Davis added two hits and pitcher Grant Byers had four strikeouts. Riley Tirotta led the Flyers with three hits and a run scored.
 
The Flyers were retired in order in the top of the first inning. Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first with a single and Cody Miller walked with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the first inning. Dayton had a single with one out in the second, but the runner was picked off and a strikeout ended the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Colin Davis hit a double down the right line for his first career hit. He was caught stealing third base to end the inning.
 
Dayton went in order in the top of the third inning and three straight ground outs ended the Wofford half of the third. The Flyers had a double with one out, but the runner was stranded in the middle of the fourth inning. The Terriers got on the board with a solo home run by Mack Nathanson to lead off the bottom of the fourth. It was his 22nd career home run to give Wofford a 1-0 advantage. The next three batters grounded out to end the inning.
 
In the fifth inning, the Flyers had a runner reach on a hit by pitch. A line-out to third baseman Max McDougald and throw to second base resulted in a double play to end the top half. With one out in the bottom half, Colin Davis singled through the left side but was stranded at second base. Dayton had a walk to lead off the sixth inning and a fielding error along with an infield single loaded the bases. A fly ball was hit to McClain Bradley in right field and his throw home beat the runner for a double play to end the top half. Wofford had one runner reach in the bottom of the sixth.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, the Flyers had a double and then a single drove in a run to tie the game at 1-1. A foul out and ground out sent the game to the stretch. Wofford's Andrew Orzel was hit by pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded after a great catch by the centerfielder on a ball hit by Colin Davis.
 
The Flyers were retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. Alex Malsch walked to lead off the bottom half of the eighth and Brett Rodriguez followed with a walk. A wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position and a walk to McClain Bradley loaded the bases. A single by Mack Nathanson drove in two runs for a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Max McDougald hit a double off the fence in left field that drove in Nathanson to push the score to 4-1. Dayton led off the ninth with a double and with one out a single gave the Flyers runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly cut the lead to 4-2, but a fly ball to right field ended the game.  
 
Grant Byers started for the Terriers went a career-long six innings. He set a new career-high with four strikeouts and did not allow a run on three hits. Matt Ellmyer (1-0) threw the final three innings and allowed two runs on four hits, along with one strikeout, to earn the win.
 
Dayton starter Peter Rozman threw four innings with one run allowed on three hits and a pair of strikeouts. Justin Longbrake went an inning with a hit and strikeout. Josh Nixon (0-1) gave up two runs in two innings with one strikeout. R.J. Wagner walked one batter. Masashi Sakamoto went two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Aaron Ernst recorded one out.
 
The Terriers will host UNC Asheville on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field. Next weekend Wofford will host Xavier, Seton Hall and Presbyterian.
