Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Marist

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a Saturday doubleheader, the Wofford College baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Marist at Russell C. King Field. Wofford won the first game 18-4, scoring nine runs in the sixth inning and hitting a total of five home runs. In the second game, Marist scored three runs in the first inning, but Wofford took a lead in the third inning and secured a 7-5 win.
                    
Wofford improves to 9-6 on the season, while Marist is 1-9. The Terriers were led by Colin Davis in the first game with four hits and seven RBIs, with Adam Scott striking out nine batters for the win. Cody Miller had two hits and three RBIs in the second game to lead the Terriers. Randy Taveras had three hits for the Red Foxes in the second game to lead the team.
 
In the first game, Marist was retired in order to start the first inning and then Brett Rodriguez walked to lead off the Wofford half of the first. McClain Bradley reached on an error, but both runners were stranded in scoring position. The Red Foxes were retired order in the second inning. Max McDougald opened the bottom of the second with a double. Lawson Hill followed with a walk and then Colin Davis had an RBI single through the left side for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a fielder's choice ended the scoring chance.
 
The Red Foxes stared the third inning with a double, but the runner was stranded at third. A single by Cody Miller opened the bottom of the third. After a fielder's choice and strikeout, Lawson Hill hit into a fielder's choice but an error on the play gave the Terriers runners on the corners. Hill stole second and then a single up the middle by Colin Davis scored both runners for a 3-0 lead. Wofford left two runners on base at the end of the third inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Marist had a single and a double to put runners in scoring position. A single plated a run for a 3-1 score before a strikeout ended the top half. McClain Bradley singled to start the bottom of the fourth and then Mack Nathanson cleared the fence in left field for a 5-1 lead. It was his fifth home run of the season. Andrew Orzel singled with one out and Lawson Hill singled with two outs. Colin Davis then hit his first career home run out to left center to give Wofford an 8-1 lead.
 
Marist was retired in order in the top of the fifth and Wofford left one runner on after a walk. The Red Foxes went in order in the top of the sixth inning and Max McDougald led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run for a 9-1 advantage. It was his first home run of the season and fourth of his career. Lawson Hill singled and moved to second on a fielding error. An RBI single by Colin Davis made it 10-1. With the bases loaded, a single by McClain Bradley drove in two runs and he moved to second on a throw. Cody Miller added an RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Orzel plated a run. Max McDougald hit his second home run of the inning to give Wofford a 17-1 lead. He becomes just the fourth player in school history to hit two home runs in an inning and the first since 2008. Two Terriers walked, but both were walked on base to end the sixth inning.
 
In the top of the seventh, a pair of walks and a single had the bases loaded with one out. A sacrifice fly plated a run and a wild pitch allowed a run to score to make it 17-3. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Alec Cargin hit a home run in his first at bat of the season for an 18-3 advantage. It was his first career home run. The Red Foxes got one run back in the top of the eighth with a solo home run by Greg Kocinski for an 18-4 score. Wofford had a hit in the bottom of the eighth, but a double play and strikeout ended the inning.
 
Adam Scott (2-1) started for the Terriers and went 6.0 innings with one run allowed on four hits. He struck out nine batters, giving him 291 for his career, and did not walk a batter. Thomas Tatham worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on one hit. Matt Ellmyer went the final 2.1 innings with one run allowed on one hit and three strikeouts.
 
Marist starter Charlie Jerla (0-3) went 3.2 innings with eight runs allowed on ten hits, along with two strikeouts and four walks. Alex Pansini threw 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Spencer Bunting allowed six runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Will Van Beusekom worked 1.2 innings with one run allowed on one hit and two strikeouts.
 
The second game began with a pair of one out singles by the Red Foxes. With runners on the corners, a sacrifice fly allowed one run to score and then an RBI single made it a 2-0 lead. A double to left center drove in a run for a 3-0 lead. Wofford opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles from Brett Rodriguez and McClain Bradley. With one out after a fielder's choice, a single up the middle by Cody Miller drove in two runs for a 3-2 score. The Terriers stranded two to end the first inning.
 
Both teams left one runner on base in the second inning. The Red Foxes stranded one in the top of the third inning. Mack Nathanson led off the bottom of the third with a double and moved to third on a fly ball. A single through the left side by Andrew Orzel tied the game. With Orzel on third, a single by Colin Davis gave Wofford a 4-3 lead. Lawson Hill added a single with two outs, but two Terriers were stranded. With runners on the corners and two outs, a rundown between first and second allowed a run to score and the game was tied 4-4.
 
Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. After a double play, Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch. A double down the right field line by Cody Miller scored Nathanson as Wofford regained the lead at 5-4. The Red Foxes led off the fifth with a single, but the runner was picked off. A pair of strikeouts ended the top half.
                                                                                                      
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Colin Davis walked and then stole second. Alex Malsch hit a single up the middle with two outs to drive in Davis for a 6-4 advantage. The Red Foxes left two on base in the top of the sixth after a runner reached on an error along with a walk. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Cody Miller walked and Andrew Orzel singled. A single by Max McDougald loaded the bases before a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
The lead-off batter in the seventh for Marist was hit by a pitch. A ground out and two strikeouts ended the top half. Lawson Hill opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Rodriguez for a 7-4 lead. Marist led off with a runner reaching on an error in the top of the eighth. After a strikeout, a double play ended the top half. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out in the top of the ninth, Marist had a single. After a strikeout, a triple down the right line made it a 7-5 game. A hit by pitch put runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Grant Byers (2-1) went 5.2 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits, along with six strikeouts. Anthony Garcia earned his first save of the season by going the final 3.2 innings with one run allowed on two hits and a career-high seven strikeouts.
 
Tony Romanelli started for Marist and allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Skylar Pichardo worked 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on four hits while striking out three. Mike Coss went the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two batters.
 
 
Due to rain in the forecast for Sunday, the two teams will complete the weekend series on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at King Field.
