Terriers Fall to LIU Brooklyn 18-5

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Wofford women's lacrosse team fell 18-5 to LIU Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. With the loss, Wofford falls to 0-5 on the season while LIU Brooklyn has won three in a row and improves to 3-4 overall.
 
The Blackbirds got on the board first on a goal from Elise Person less than three minutes into the game. LIU Brooklyn added three more goals before Wofford scored on a goal from Hannah Mutch. The Blackbirds responded with another four goals and had an 8-1 lead at the half.
 
Twenty seconds into the second half Sophie Smith netted a goal for the Terriers on a free position shot. As before, LIU responded. The Blackbirds fired off five straight to push the lead to 13-2 and enact the running clock. Wofford, however, scored three of the next four goals. With 16:34 left in the game, Smith added another Wofford goal, her eighth of the season.
 
Mutch tacked on another goal two and a half minutes later on Hannah Wurzel's first assist of her career. Mutch and Smith lead the Terriers with eight goals on the season. Sarah Smith scored for the Blackbirds before Paige Sedlar netted her fifth goal of the season on a pass from Mutch. LIU Brooklyn scored four goals in the final eight minutes to win 18-5.
 
LIU attempted 36 shots, more than double Wofford's 15. The Blackbirds picked up 19 groundballs, while Wofford tallied 12. Each team pulled down 13 draw controls. The Terriers had 20 turnovers and LIU Brooklyn finished with seven. Wofford finished with 13 successful clears in 17 attempts and LIU Brooklyn finished 16-17.
 
Goalkeeper Kelsey Thompson tallied 10 saves in the loss.
 
Wofford remains at home for the next contest as the Terriers host San Diego State on Sunday, Feb. 18 at noon.
