Baseball Rallies For 3-2 Win At Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team rallied for a 3-2 win over Presbyterian College at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose scored one run each in the first and second innings, with the Terriers plating one in the fifth. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Wofford scored twice on three hits for a 3-2 lead.
 
Wofford is now 23-11 on the season and Presbyterian College is 12-23. The teams have split the series so far this season and will meet for a third time on May 2 in Spartanburg. The Terriers had six different players with one hit each, with Cody Miller, Lawson Hill and Alex Malsh driving in runs. The Blue Hose had ten hits in the contest.  
 
On the first pitch of the game, Colin Davis had a single up the middle. A double play and ground out ended the top half of the first. The Blue Hose had a walk with one out. With the runner on second and two outs, a single plated a run for a 1-0 lead. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning and the Blue Hose led off the bottom of the second with a single. A single up the middle with two outs drove in the run to make it 2-0. Another single had runners on the corners before a strikeout ended the inning.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third inning, Presbyterian left one runner on base following a two-out single. Both teams went in order in the fourth inning. With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Brett Rodriguez walked and Cody Miller was hit by a pitch. A walk to Alec Cargin loaded the bases with two outs and Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch to score a run for a 2-1 game. The Terriers left the bases loaded in the middle of the fifth inning.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Hose had a single. On a double to right field, the lead runner was out at home to end the inning. Wofford went in order in the top of the sixth inning and Presbyterian led off the bottom of the fifth with a runner reaching on an error. A pair of fielder's choices and a ground out ended the inning. Brett Rodriguez walked to lead off the seventh inning, but was picked off. Max McDougald doubled with two outs, but was left on base at the seventh inning stretch.
 
The Blue Hose were retired in order to end the seventh inning. Alex Malsch singled to open the eighth inning but was caught stealing second for the third out of the frame. Presbyterian had a single to start the bottom half of the eighth. The runner moved to second and third base on wild pitches. With two outs, a ground out ended the inning.
 
Wofford had two outs in the top of the ninth when Brett Rodriguez singled. He stole second base and scored on a double to left field by Cody Miller to tie the game at 2-2. Max McDougald was hit by a pitch and a pinch hit single by Lawson Hill drove in Miller for a 3-2 lead. Wofford left two on base in the middle of the ninth. The Blue Hose had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the ninth. After a strikeout for the second out, a fly ball to right field ended the game.  
 
Scottie Wallace made his first career start and went four innings with two runs allowed on five hits, along with three strikeouts. Jake Hershman (1-3) threw four innings and did not allow a run on three hits. Anthony Garcia gave up two hits in a third of an inning. Matt Ellmyer earned his second save of the season by getting the final two outs.
 
Presbyterian College starting pitcher Andrew Durden threw 4.2 innings with one run allowed on one hit and four strikeouts. Colton Springs worked 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and one strikeout. Eric Miles went two innings with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Ryan Hedrick (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout in an inning on the mound.
 
Wofford will begin a three-game Southern Conference series at Furman on Friday at 5:00 p.m. The series continues on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Please note the start times for the games on Friday and Saturday have changed.
