Baseball Rallies For 12-10 Win At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College baseball team rallied from an early deficit and defeated VMI 12-10 in eleven innings at Gray-Minor Stadium on Sunday afternoon. After three innings the Keydets had an 8-2 lead. Wofford scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and after five innings VMI had a 9-7 advantage. Three runs in the top of the eighth gave Wofford a 10-9 lead, but the Keydets scored in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In the 11th inning, Wofford plated two runs and VMI was retired in order to end the game.
 
Wofford is now 33-20 on the season and 13-8 in the Southern Conference to sit in third place. VMI is 25-23 overall and 11-10 in the league. The Terriers won the series against the Keydets. McClain Bradley had three hits – two of which were home runs - and five RBIs to lead the Terriers, while Mack Nathanson added three hits. The Keydets were led by Matt Pita with three hits as the team hit four home runs.
 
Brett Rodriguez led off the game with a single, but the Keydets turned a double play and a strikeout ended the top of the first. In the bottom of the first with one out, a single was followed by a home run by Will Malbon for a 2-0 lead. A hit by pitch and single were followed by a single, which along with a fielding error allowed two runs to score to make it 4-0. With one out in the top of the second, Colin Davis walked and Lawson Hill doubled. Max McDougald was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, a wild pitch advanced the runners and a strikeout ended the top half with a 4-1 score.
 
In the bottom of the second with one out, a hit by pitch was followed by a triple to give VMI a 5-1 lead. A home run by Peyton Maddox pushed the lead to 7-1 and a solo shot by Matt Dunlevy made it 8-1. With one out in the top of the third, Wofford had singles by Mack Nathanson and McClain Bradley. Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a wild pitch advanced the runners for an 8-2 game. Lawson Hill walked with two outs to load the bases, but a fly ball ended the top half. The Keydets were retired in order to end the third inning.
 
Wofford opened the fourth inning with a walk by Alec Cargin and a single by Alex Malsch. With one out, a double down the third base line by Mack Nathanson drove in Cargin and a home run by McClain Bradley cleared the bases to make it an 8-6 score. It was Bradley's fifth home run of the season. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Will Malbon hit his second homer of the game for a 9-6 game.
 
The Terriers added a single by Alec Cargin in the top of the fifth with two outs and he stole second base. A single by Alec Malsch scored Cargin to cut the lead to 9-7 in the middle of the inning. The Keydets stranded one runner after a lead-off single in the bottom of the fifth. Mack Nathanson had a bunt single to open the sixth inning, but was left on second base. VMI went in order to end the sixth inning.
 
Max McDougald singled, Alec Cargin walked and Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. A strikeout and fly ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Keydets began their half of the seventh with back-to-back singled to put runners on the corners. With one out, a fielder's choice resulted in an out at home plate. A fly ball ended the inning.
 
A solo home run by McClain Bradley in the top of the eighth inning cut the lead to 9-8. It was his second homer of the game and sixth of the season. Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. A fly ball advanced Orzel to third base and he scored on a single by Lawson Hill to tie the game at 9-9. Hill stole second and moved to third on an error on the play. A sacrifice fly by Max McDougald scored Hill to give Wofford a 10-9 lead. VMI led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A double put runners in scoring position and after a strikeout a walk loaded the bases. A fly ball stranded three runners at the end of the eighth inning.
 
Alex Malsch drew a walk to lead off the top of the ninth inning and he stole second. He was caught stealing third and a fly ball ended the top half. In the bottom of the ninth, the Keydets had a strikeout and ground out. An infield single and error had a runner at second base. A triple drove in a run to tie the game at 10-10.
 
In the top of the tenth, Andrew Orzel singled with one out but did not advance. The Keydets were retired in order as the game went to the 11th inning. Max McDougald singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt to start the 11th inning. A ground out moved the runner to third and a walk to Brett Rodriguez put runners on the corners with two outs. Mack Nathanson walked to load the bases and a walk to McClain Bradley plated a run for an 11-10 lead. A run scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-10 game and Ty Reginelli walked to load the bases.  A fly ball ended the top of the 11th with three runners stranded. The Keydets were retired in order to end the game.
 
Matt Ellmyer started for the Terriers and threw two innings with eight runs allowed on seven hits, along with three strikeouts. Clay Schwaner worked three innings and allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout. Anthony Garcia (4-1) went a career-long six innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out four.
 
VMI starter Brandon Barbery went four innings with six runs allowed on seven hits, while striking out five batters. Matthew Eagle threw 2.1 innings with one run allowed on four hits and two strikeouts. Derek Tremblay gave up two runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Nathan Eaton (2-1) went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits while striking out four batters. Corey Johnston retired the one batter he faced.  
 
The Terriers are now 3-1 in extra-inning games this season. After a few days off for exams, the Terriers will host ETSU for a three-game series beginning on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
