SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final game of the regular season, the Wofford College baseball rallied for a 9-8 win in eleven innings over ETSU at Russell C. King Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs had an 8-0 lead in the middle of the sixth inning, but the Terriers battled back with two runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8. After neither team scored in the ninth or tenth innings, the Bucs left one runner on base in the top of the 11
th. Wofford had the first two batters in the bottom of the 11
th reach base and a single up the middle by
Lawson Hill drove in the winning run in the 9-8 final score.

Wofford is now 35-21 overall and 15-9 in the Southern Conference. The 15 conference wins are the most for Wofford in school history. ETSU is 27-23 overall and 11-13 in league play. The Terriers won two of the three games in the series against the Bucs.
Lawson Hill and
Max McDougald each had two hits for the Terriers. The Bucs were led by Chris Cook, Aaron Maher and Cade Gilbert with three hits each.

The Bucs scored one run in the top of the first inning on a pair of hits and a Wofford error to take a 1-0 lead.
Mack Nathanson walked with one out in the bottom of the first, but the inning ended on a double play. ETSU left two runners on base in the top of the second after a single and a walk. Wofford had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the second after a walk by
Lawson Hill, single by
Max McDougald and a hit by pitch to
Alec Cargin. A ground out left the bases loaded at the end of the second.

In the top of the third, the Bucs led off with a runner on second after an error. With two outs, the runner scored on a single to give ETSU a 2-0 advantage. Wofford went in order in the bottom of the third inning. The Bucs had a double to open the fourth inning and the runner moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, an RBI single made it a 3-0 game.

The Terriers had a single by
Lawson Hill in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, but he was stranded. ETSU led off the fifth inning with a double and hit by pitch. With one out, a walk loaded the bases. An infield single and a fielder's choice both scored runs for a 5-0 lead. A walk loaded the bases and a single by Chris Cook drove in two runs for a 7-0 advantage.

Alec Cargin and
Brett Rodriguez walked in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game entered a delay for 36 minutes due to lightning. With the teams back on the field, two fly balls ended the inning with the runners stranded. Aaron Maher had a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to push the lead to 8-0. In the bottom of the sixth,
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch to lead off and
Colin Davis followed with a double. Ground outs by
Lawson Hill and
Max McDougald drove in runs to make it an 8-2 game.

After the Bucs were retired in order in the top of the seventh,
Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom half of the inning. After
Brett Rodriguez reached on an error, a single by
Mack Nathanson drove in a run. A wild pitch allowed a run to score for an 8-4 margin. The Bucs left runners on the corners in the top of the eighth after a hit by pitch and single. Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on an error, single by
Max McDougald and walk by
Alec Cargin. A single up the middle by
Alex Malsch drove in two runs for an 8-6 score. A walk to
Brett Rodriguez loaded the bases and a ground out by
Mack Nathanson made it a one run game. A ground out by
McClain Bradley drove in the tying run and the teams headed to the ninth inning at 8-8.

With one out in the top of the ninth, the Bucs had a double. A fly ball and ground out ended the top half. Wofford had two outs in the bottom of the ninth when
Max McDougald walked. A line out ended the ninth. The Bucs stranded one runner in the tenth after a hit by pitch and the Terriers were retired in order.

In the top of the eleventh, the Bucs had a single with two outs before a fly ball ended the half.
McClain Bradley led off the bottom half with a single and
Andrew Orzel walked. With one out a double steal moved the runners into scoring position. A single up the middle by
Lawson Hill drove in Bradley for the 9-8 victory.

Clay Schwaner started for the Terriers and went four innings with five runs allowed on eight hits, along with two strikeouts.
Matt Ellmyer worked an inning with two runs allowed on two hits, while striking out two batters.
David Ehmen threw two innings with one run allowed and two strikeouts.
Jake Hershman went two innings and did not allow a run on two hits.
Anthony Garcia (5-1) earned the win by not allowing a run over the final two innings. He gave up one hit and had two strikeouts.

ETSU starter Daniel Sweeney threw four innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout. Logan Gentry worked two innings with two runs allowed on one hit. Dominick Stefanacci gave up two runs on one hit in an inning. Carter Linton allowed four runs on two hits and a walk. Aaron Maher (0-1) allowed one run on two hits in the final 3.1 innings.

The contest was the final home game for nine Wofford seniors who were honored before the game:

Adam Scott. The game was the fifth to go extra innings this season for the Terriers (4-1). Wofford will open the Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. against ETSU.
