SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 12-10 by USC Upstate at Harley Park. The Terriers jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings. The next four innings of the game belonged to the Spartans as they outscored Wofford 11-1 to take a 12-8 advantage. In the ninth, Wofford scored twice but left the bases loaded to end the game.  Â

Wofford is now 31-19 on the season and USC Upstate is 23-24-1 overall. The teams split the series this season, with each team winning at home.
McClain Bradley and
Alec Cargin led the Terriers with three hits each.
Colin Davis added two hits and three RBIs. The Spartans were led by Kyle Gensler with four hits and Toran Shahidi with four RBIs on three hits.

Brett Rodriguez led off the game with a double and he scored with two outs when
McClain Bradley reached first on a fielding error for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans had a single and with two outs tied the game with an RBI double. In the second inning,
Colin Davis singled with one out and
Max McDougald followed with a walk. A single by
Alec Cargin drove in Davis for a 2-1 advantage in the middle of the second.

After the Spartans went in order in the bottom of the second,
Mack Nathanson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
McClain Bradley singled and moved to second on the throw, with Nathanson advancing to third. Nathanson was out at home on a fielder's choice, but a home run by
Colin Davis with two outs pushed the lead to 5-1. It was his eighth home run of the season. The Spartans had two hits in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth inning,
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch with two outs. A triple by
McClain Bradley scored Orzel for a 6-1 game.
Lawson Hill reached on an error and Bradley crossed home plate for a 7-1 advantage. The Spartans left two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth after a single and a walk. Wofford added a single in the top of the fifth by
Alec Cargin. In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans led off with back-to-back singles. After a double play, a walk had runners on the corners and a single plated a run to make it a 7-2 game. A double with two outs cut the lead to 7-3 before a strikeout ended the inning.

Mack Nathanson led off the sixth inning with a double and
McClain Bradley added a single with one out. A bunt single by
Lawson Hill scored Nathanson to give Wofford an 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans began with a walk and an RBI double for an 8-4 score.
Max McDougald singled to start the seventh inning, but one runner was stranded at the seventh inning stretch.

The Spartans began the bottom of the seventh with a hit by pitch and a single. A double plated both runners to cut the lead to 8-6. A single and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A fielder's choice made it a one run game and a single through the right side tied the game at 8-8. The Spartans took a lead on a single up the middle and added a run on a wild pitch for a 10-8 lead before a strikeout ended the frame.

Wofford had a walk by
McClain Bradley with two outs in the top of the eighth.
Lawson Hill reached second on a throwing error, but a ground out left both runners in scoring position. The Spartans had a double, triple and single to start the bottom of the eighth as they took a 12-8 advantage.
Max McDougald singled to lead off the top of the ninth and
Reed Massey entered the game as a pinch runner. A single by
Alex Malsch and a fielding error gave the Terriers runners on second and third base. A walk by
Brett Rodriguez loaded the bases and a double off the wall in left center scored two runs to make it a 12-10 game.
McClain Bradley received an intentional walk to load the bases with two outs. A ground out ended the game.

Clay Schwaner started for the Terriers and threw four innings with one run allowed on five hits.
Ty Reginelli allowed two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Matt Ellmyer gave up four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings, along with two strikeouts.
Anthony Garcia (3-1) went two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on two hits.
Jake Hershman allowed one hit in a third of an inning.
Jake Dippold went a third of an inning with two runs allowed on three hits.
David Ehmen did not allow a hit in two-thirds of an inning.

On a staff day for USC Upstate, starter Blake Whitney went an inning with one unearned run allowed on a hit. Trey Van der Weide added an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Jordan Marks gave up three runs on three hits in an inning. Sean Hupp worked three innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Will Wheeler (2-1) threw 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Will Hardigree allowed one hits and Grant Hoppock earned the save by not allowing a hit in the final two-thirds of an inning.
