SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team continued preparation for the 2018 season with a scrimmage on Saturday morning at Gibbs Stadium. The team ran approximately 60 plays, which were highlighted by three touchdowns for the offense and an interception by JoJo Tillery.  
 
"We have a long way to go, but we knew that we did," said head coach Josh Conklin. "We have a lot of young guys that need to understand the urgency of stepping up. Next week we will more than likely rep the older guys more than we did today which will be good. We have a lot of work to do in all phases, so it was good to give a wake-up call to everybody. We are trying to figure out where guys fit in the system and what guys strengths and weaknesses are, so we are going to put some guys in uncomfortable situations. Defensively except for a few big plays with our back-ups in there we executed well. There is still a lot to improve upon."
 
Joe Newman took the first snaps at quarterback and the offense was three-and-out. On the next series, JoJo Tiller intercepted a deep pass. With Miller Mosley under center, Evan Suggs had a 20-yard run for a first down, but a sack by Jireh Wilson and an incomplete pass ended the drive. After another three-and-out series, the offense answered with a 45-yard touchdown reception.
 
With Joe Newman back at quarterback, he completed a 40-yard pass to Landon Parker for a first down. Newman capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Miller Mosley ran the next three series. Jimmy Weirick had the following series and completed one pass. Logan Thomas had a 20-yard completion to Garrison Moore in double coverage and then handed off to Jamari Broussard for a 60-yard touchdown. Jimmy Weirick was in for the final series of the day that included a 20-yard run by D'mauriae VanCleave.
 
Defensive highlights, along with the interception by JoJo Tillery, included sacks by Jireh Wilson, Rett Russell, and Ryan Titus. Robbie Armstrong, Graham Massey, Jireh Wilson and Rett Russell had pass break-ups.
 
On special teams, Luke Carter made all four PATs and was 3-of-4 on field goals, with the lone miss coming from 50 yards. Dawson Henis was 3-of-3 on PATs and added a 37-yard field goal. Both Carter and Henis also handled kickoff and punting duties during the scrimmage.
 
After an off day on Sunday, the Terriers will continue preparations for the season opener with a 3:30 p.m. practice on Monday. Practices for the remainder of the week will be at 9:00 a.m.
 
NOTABLES: The Southern Conference officials called a total of six penalties on the day and after practice went over the points of emphasis for the season … The defense forced eight three-and-outs … Players held out of the scrimmage due to injury include WR Cole Cleary, LB Zy Abercrombie, OL Nick Russo, QB Corey Cooper, DL Austin Lufkin, LB T.J.
