COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team fell short, 5-0, on Wednesday night at Stone Stadium against South Carolina. A four minute spurt that resulted in four goals for the Gamecocks would decide the match midway through the second half as the Terriers drop to 1-5-1 overall on the season.Â
The Terriers found themselves on the defensive early on as the Gamecocks pushed into Wofford territory, earning three corner kick opportunities within the first five minutes of play. A handball in the box would cost the Terriers in the 10th minute as it set up the Gamecocks' first goal of the night on a converted penalty kick by Peyton Ericson. South Carolina went on to control the remainder of the first half, outshooting Wofford 8-2. Wofford's two lone shots in the first half came on a shot from Lucas Altman, that was blocked, and a shot from Sam Ross that was met by South Carolina's keeper. Despite the shot discrepancy, Shane Berson recorded three saves in the first half to keep the Gamecocks lead at one entering the intermission.Â
Wofford hung around with the Gamecocks in the second half until, around the 65th minute, South Carolina found their second goal of the match that triggered a scoring surge that would ensue shortly after. The Gamecocks would go on to score three more goals in the following three minutes to extend the lead to five with 20 minutes remaining. Wofford's lone scoring chances in the second half came on a shot from Walt Stevens and an early header by Ethan Willie, however, South Carolina's stingy defense were able to block the remainder of shots from Connor Donohue and Sam Ross. South Carolina controlled the tempo of the match going forward, ultimately earning the 5-0 win at the end of regulation.Â
Sam Ross, Connor Donohue, and Ethan Willie led the Terriers with two shots apiece while Lucas Altman and Walt Stevens both had one each. Shane Berson earned four saves on the night while Grant Wollam finished the match with one of his own.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 25 for a 7 p.m. road contest against Charlotte.
