Men's Soccer Suffers Loss at No. 20 Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team lost 2-0 against nationally ranked No. 20 Charlotte on Tuesday night at Transamerica Field. Two early goals in the first half would plague the Terriers as the loss drops Wofford to 1-6-1 overall on the season.

Charlotte dominated the first 45 minutes of play, only allowing Wofford one shot for the entire half. Wofford's lone shot in the first half came in the seventh minute on an early shot from Sam Ross. The 49ers found their first goal of the night in the 16th minute on a tap-in from Charlotte's Myles Brown. The 49ers attack would continue to pour on shots eventually scoring their second goal of the night shortly after in the 29th minute to give Charlotte the early 2-0 lead. Going forward, Shane Berson was able to grab four saves to hold the deficit at 2-0 leading into the half.

The second half was more of the same, though the Terriers defense came out resilient holding the 49ers scoreless throughout the frame. Wofford found a pair of scoring opportunities in the 57th and 61th minute from Ethan Willie, on a header, and Connor Donohue, but unfortunately were both saved by Charlotte's keeper Elliot Panicco. Charlotte would eventually go on to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the period to secure the 2-0 win at the end of regulation.

The 49ers took the shot advantage for the match, outshooting Wofford 16-4, while also taking the corner kick advantage with three to the Terriers one.

The matchup between the two teams proved to be an aggressive one as four yellow cards were given out throughout the match. Charlotte's Callum Montgomery (39') received one while Sam Ross (44'), Zach Aversano (51'), and Connor Donohue (54') claimed Wofford's for the match.

The Terriers found shots on goal from Zach Aversano, Ethan Willie, and Connor Donohue while Sam Ross rounded out the shots for Wofford on the night.

Despite the loss, Shane Berson recorded six saves in the match.

Next, the Terriers prepare to travel to Durham on Tuesday, October 2 for a tough 7 p.m. road matchup against nationally ranked No. 9 Duke.
