Men's Soccer Earns Road Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team earned its first win, 1-0, against Winthrop on Sunday night at Eagle Field. Connor Donohue found the tiebreaker in the 71st minute as the Terriers were able to hold on to the lead for its first win of the 2018 season. The win moves the Terriers to 1-2-1 overall.

The first half was played fairly even as there weren't many scoring chances by both squads. Wofford struck early in the match on two shots from Eduardo Velazco, but both were met by the Eagles keeper. Zach Aversano also found a shot opportunity in the 34th minute but was successively saved by Winthrop's keeper as well. Lucas Altman almost put the Terriers on the scoreboard shortly after off an Aversano corner kick but steered the shot wide left, eventually sending both teams into the half scoreless.

The second half was livelier as both teams came out the intermission immediately firing up shots. Wofford would find shots from Brett Goodman, Lucas Altman, and Ben Nickol before Connor Donohue found his and the Terriers first goal of the season in the 71st minute off the helper from Walt Stevens. The Terriers defense was able to hold its ground for the duration of the match with a series of blocked shot attempts and saves from goalkeeper Shane Berson to conlude the Big South/SoCon challenge with a win.

The Terriers were led by Connor Donohue with one goal while Walt Stevens earned the assist on the night. Ben Nickol had three shots for the match while teammates Eduardo Velazco and Lucas Altman followed with two shots each. Zach Aversano, Austin Tuggle, and Brett Goodman took one shot apiece.

Wofford outshot the Eagles 11-9 for the contest while Winthrop took the corner kick advantage, totaling nine to Wofford's four.

Additionally, Shane Berson earned his first win of the season, notching three saves on the night.

The Terriers return back to action on Friday, September 7, where they will travel to face UNLV in the UNLV/Johann Memorial Classic for a 10 pm (ET) contest. Wofford then concludes the UNLV/Johann Memorial Classic on Sunday, September 9 at 7:30 pm (ET) against Cal Baptist.
