Box Score LAS VEGAS, NV - The Wofford men's soccer team fell short 3-1 to UNLV in its first match of the UNLV/Johann Memorial Classic on Friday night. UNLV found a late goal in the 84th minute to seal the deal for the Rebels as the time remaining didn't allow for a Wofford comeback. The Terriers drop to 1-3-1 overall on the season.
UNLV started out the first half on the attack, putting up seven shots to Wofford's four. The Rebels first goal came in the 23rd minute when UNLV's Adam Musovski connected on a header from Nico Clasen to take the lead. Just 11Â minutes later, the pair would link up again on a corner kick for another Musovski goal to push the lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute. The Terriers found scoring opportunities shortly after on shots from Eduardo Velazco and Peyton Smith, but both were saved by the Rebel's keeper to hold the lead going into the half.Â
The Terriers came out the intermission responding with a goal of their own in the 58th minute. Eduardo Velazco found Ethan Willie for a header of his own to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Terriers defense played resilient against the Rebels going forward, however, UNLV would go on to convert its third and final goal of the match in the 84th minute to put the game out of reach.Â
UNLV outshot Wofford 15-6 and also took the corner kick advantage, earning seven to Wofford's five on the match.Â
Freshman Ethan Willie scored his first career goal on the night while Eduardo Velazco added his first assist on the season. Teammates Lucas Altman and Peyton Smith each had a shot on goal in the match while Kyle Nelson and Austin Tuggle both took one shot apiece.Â
Shane Berson saved two shots on the night.
The Terriers return back to action in the UNLV/Johann Memorial Classic on Sunday, September 9 when they face Cal Baptist for a 7:30 p.m. (ET) contest at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
