SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team came away with a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival USC Upstate Friday night at Snyder Field. Wofford would go on to find the tiebreaker in the 80
th minute to secure its second win of the season. The Terriers move to 2-4-1 overall on the season.
The Spartans wasted no time scoring in the first half, finding its only goal of the match in the first minute of play on a shot from the close right wing by USC Upstate's Abbie Ellis. The Spartans were on the offensive for most of the first half as they earned 10 corner kick opportunities to Wofford's two. The Terriers responded with a pair of shots from
Hayley Younginer before Wofford would tie the score at 1-1 in the 20
th minute.
Emma Fletcher took on the Spartans defense herself, finding enough wiggle room to fire a shot from the top of the box that met the left side of the goal. The Terriers defense was able to hold off the surge of shots from USC Upstate for the duration of the half, as
Maria Mon recorded seven saves to send both teams into the intermission tied at 1-1.
The Spartans outshot the Terriers in the first half 15-7.
The Terriers defense continued to hold its ground, successfully defending all nine of USC Upstate's shots in the second half. As the period progressed, Wofford started to find breakthroughs in the Spartans defense, allowing for shots from Younginer,
Rachel Shinnick,
Erin Wolfe, and
Dani Segovia. The Terriers would go on to find the tiebreaker in the 80
th minute, as
Dani Segovia capitalized on an excellent find just past midfield from
Emma Fletcher to score the game-winning goal. Wofford went on to control the remainder of play, earning the 2-1 victory.
Emma Fletcher earned three points on the night, registering her first goal and assist of the season, while
Dani Segovia claimed her third goal of the season in the match.
Hayley Younginer led the Terriers with five shots while
Emma Fletcher followed behind with three shots of her own.
Dani Segovia had two shots on the night while teammates
Rachel Shinnick,
Anna Opgaard,
Catie Slater, and
Erin Wolfe all finished with one each.
Maria Mon earned the win, accomplishing a consecutive season-high of 10 saves.
The Terriers remain unbeaten by USC Upstate in program history as Wofford now pushes the all-time series lead to 7-0-1.
Wofford is back in action on Sunday, September 9 for a 4 p.m. contest against Presbyterian at Snyder Field.
