Women's Tennis Pulls Out 4-3 Win at UNC Wilmington

Terriers advance to 2-0 on opening weekend

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Terriers finished the opening weekend of the 2019 spring season 2-0, as the Wofford women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over UNC Wilmington on Saturday. Wofford swept the Seahawks in doubles play, while taking three singles matches to clinch the win and give UNC Wilmington their first loss of the season.

The Seahawks competed hard in doubles play, however, Wofford would conquer and prevail to secure the early 1-0 lead. Lauren Joch and Liz Massie would bring in the first win of the day for the Terriers in the No. 3 position, 6-4, as the duo of Kay Kluska and Lilie Steryous (No. 2) picked up where they left off on Friday, also earning a 6-4 win over the Seahawks. Cassidy Hicks and Jenna Vroman received a challenge in the No. 1 doubles against UNCW's Sabrina Barisano and Maddy Muller-Hughes, but would ultimately hold on for the 7-5 tiebreaker win to give Wofford the advantage heading into singles play.

Senior Cassidy Hicks went on to earn a solid 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 2 singles over Lea Dubois-Rebiere, though, the Seahawks' Barisano answered with a win in the No. 5 position (6-2, 6-4) over redshirt-freshman Lauren Joch. Steryous would then pick the Terriers up with a crucial win in the No. 3 position to push a 3-1 lead with three singles matches left.

UNCW began to buckle down, forcing competitive matches, however, sophomore Jenna Vroman would go on to clinch the win for Wofford, taking the No. 1 singles over Rishika Ravindran, 7-5, 6-3, to hold a 4-1 edge.

The Seahawks would follow picking up wins in the No. 4 and No. 6 position to complete singles play, though, Wofford would remain victorious with the 4-3 win at the end of the day.

The Terriers return back to Spartanburg next to face crosstown foe USC Upstate on Thursday, January 24. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
