Box Score Spartanburg, SC – The Wofford men's soccer team leveled the score twice during the match but couldn't get the victory as they fell 3-2.
With its final non-conference game in the books, Wofford's record goes to 4-10-1 and remains 2-1-1 in the SoCon. USC Upstate gets its fifth win of the year bringing their record to 5-10, 1-5 in the Big South.
Both teams came flying out of the gates with 10 shots coming within the first 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it would be the Spartans who would score in the 2
nd minute, the goal coming from Pascal Corvino. Wofford would respond with shots from
Brandon Oddy,
Sam Ross, and
Adrian Roseth, but the ball would not find the twine. Upstate returned with its own flurry of shots but
Shane Berson was up to the task to keep the score 1-0.
From all the back-and-forth action between the two squads a second goal was bound to come, and it did from the Terriers. The ref would point to the penalty spot in the 41
st minute and
Lucas Altman was calm, cool, and collected as he slotted it into the back of the net. Altman's goal would give the Terriers momentum going into halftime.
The momentum for Wofford wouldn't last long into the 2
nd half as USC Upstate would have almost 20 minutes of straight pressure. The Spartans' pressure would eventually break down the Terriers' defense as Michael Chappelear would re-give the lead to Upstate.
Wofford's spirits were anything but spooked after that goal because Maecon Urueta would score in the 78
th minute to bring the match back level. Upstate would be credited with a penalty of its own late in the match and would convert to give the Spartans a 3-2 win.
Lucas Altman's penalty goal gave him his second goal of the season.
Adrian Roseth had a team-high five shots.
Shane Berson's seven saves is a personal season-high and ties a team-high this year.
Wofford will play its final home game against rival Furman on Tuesday, October 29 at Snyder Field at 7:00 p.m.
