Men's golf caps off fall season at Steelwood Invitational

LOXLEY, Ala. – The Wofford men's golf team completed its fall season on Sunday, placing ninth at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational. Individually, Matthew Copeland had a strong finish to the fall campaign, tying for 19th place with a 3-over-par 219 for the tournament.

As a team, Wofford shot an opening-round 298 before a strong round-two performance in which the Terriers carded a 289. Wofford capped off the tournament on Sunday by shooting 302 as a team, finishing in ninth place overall.

"Really proud of our guys," said Wofford Head Coach Alex Hamilton. "They fought really hard through the tough weather. We battled a lot of rain and wind on Saturday and some cold conditions today."

The tournament wraps up fall competition for the Terriers, who competed in six events from September through October. Wofford will open up its spring season on February 10 in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.

"Proud of Matthew's play this weekend." Hamilton said. "Copeland played three solid rounds and notched his second top-20 finish of the fall which is great."

Copeland opened the tournament on Saturday with a 2-over-par 74, bouncing back with a 2-under-par 70, tying his lowest round of the 2019 Fall season. After starting round two with a par and a double, the sophomore became locked in, birdieing holes 5, 9, 16 and 18 to put himself at even par for the tournament. The Maryville, Tennessee native finished the tournament with a 3-over-par 75, shooting even par on the last nine holes.

Nick Willis was the next low scorer for the Terriers, carding a 223 to finish 5-over-par overall. Willis shot a round-one 74 but responded to shoot even par in round two before totaling a 77 in round three. Walker Simas was just two strokes behind, shooting a pair of 74's before final-round 77. Henry Augenstein rounded out the scoring for Wofford, totaling 228 over three rounds to edge out Stuart Fuller by a stroke.

"Our guys hung in there and beat some good teams," said Hamilton. "Looking forward to getting back out there and competing in the spring with this team."
