WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team competed in the 2019 ITA Carolina Regionals from Thursday, October 24 to Saturday, October 26 at Wake Forest University. The field of 130 players represented 23 schools.
Overall the Terriers each won a doubles match and won 14 singles matches with wins over The University of North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, NC State, UNC Charlotte, College of Charleston, Campbell, Western Carolina, Gardner Webb, NC Central, UNC Greensboro.
The Terriers had four teams compete in the main draw of doubles. Vroman/Steryous won their first round against Ana Castillo/Inma Ramón Revert of Campbell, before falling in the second round to the fifth-seeded team of Megan Davies/Mia Horvit from the University of South Carolina.
Fischer/Wilbur won their first round against Lea Cutura/Lou Regen of Campbell, before falling to the ninth seeded team of Allie Sanford/Anika Yariagadda of the University of North Carolina
Kluska/Hildell and Massie/Rubanov both lost their first round matches to N.C. State and Gardner-Webb respectively. Then both teams went on to win their consolation matches against N.C. Central and UNC Charlotte.
Jenna Vroman competed in the main draw for the Terriers, while freshman
Georgia Fischer was in the qualifying draw. All seven other terriers saw action in the B Draw.
In the qualifying draw on Thursday, Fischer lost to Sydney Riley from Clemson. She then bounced back and got two wins over Iryna Vardanian from Coastal Carolina and Jordan Strickland of Western Carolina.
In the main draw,
Jenna Vroman fell just short of the #18 ranked college player of Duke - Meible Chi 6-2, 3-6,6-3, who was seeded fifth. She then defeated Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe from N.C. State before falling to Ana Cruz from the University of South Carolina.
In the B draw, Hardeman, Hildell, Kluska,Massie,Rubanov, Steryous,and Wilbur all represented the Terriers. Kluska and Rubanov recorded first round wins over Milica Panic (Gardner-Webb) and Anna Harmon (North Carolina) respectively. Rubanov then won her second round match defeating Lizzie Nowak from the College of Charleston before falling in the quarters to teammate
Liz Massie.
After falling to Madeleine Lynch of Wake Forest, Wilbur found success in the consolation draw beating Tayah Cross of UNC Greensboro and Inma Ramon Revert of Campbell before falling in the semifinals to Victoria Walter of The College of Charleston.
Lilie Steryous picked up a win the B draw consolation defeating Ariana Chan of UNC Greensboro while
Ansley Hardeman picked up a win against Flaminia Scara of Coastal Carolina.
Liz Massie was the finalist of the B draw. She defeated Mayumi Saguchi of Gardner Webb, Brianna Gomez of UNCG, fellow teammate
Rebecca Rubanov, and Jessie Mount of Coastal Carolina en route to the finals. In the finals, she lost a hard-fought match to Michelle Ncube (East Carolina) by a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 score.
Next, the Terriers will host the Wofford Fall Invite from Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10 at the Reeves Tennis Center to complete the fall tournament season.
