CLINTON, S.C. - The Wofford men's golf team capped off its strong showing at the 2019 Musgrove Mill Intercollegiate Match Play, finishing in second place overall.
"I'm proud of the guys and how we fought this week," said Wofford Head Coach
Alex Hamilton. "We did a really good job of keeping the ball in front of us and making other teams try to beat us while playing consistent, solid golf."
The Terriers, who were ranked sixth out of the eight teams going into the tournament, opened up with a 3-2 victory over the third-seeded Gardner-Webb.
Carlos Garre,
Matthew Copeland and
Stuart Fuller all held serve, giving Wofford the victory.
"We had good wins over very a very good Gardner-Webb team," Hamilton said. "They only lost one match after facing us so they are clearly playing well so that was big for us."Â
In round two on Monday, Copeland,
Nick Willis and
Ryan Marter all scored victories for the Terriers, while Fuller was all square with his opponent to help Wofford defeat the No. 2 seed Radford Highlanders.Â
"We faced a very talented Radford team, said Hamilton. "Coach Grant always does a great job with them so those were good wins for us."
On Tuesday, the Terriers faced the fourth-seeded High Point Panthers, dropping the 3-2 decision down the stretch, with Fuller and Marter garnering the points for Wofford.Â
"It was a neck-and-neck battle with High Point today," Hamilton said. "Unfortunately some of the later rounds didn't go our way. We picked up two wins and three loses to lose 3-2 to High Point but it was a good fight and I'm proud of the guys for the way they played."
