Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team lost against Gardner-Webb by a score of 67-53. The Terriers move to 0-3 on the season, while Gardner-Webb moves to 1-1.
Chloe Wanink led all players with 23 points,
Lilly Hatton had a career-high nine rebounds, and
Da'Ja Green had a game-high five assists.
Jamari McDavid got the game rolling with a put-back layup. Then, Wanink scored an "And-1" and a fast break jumper to cut the Gardner-Webb lead to one, 8-7. The Runnin' Bulldogs would score eight out of the last 12 points in the quarter to give them a 16-11 lead into the second.
Hatton would make the first basket of the 2
nd quarter and knock down a pair of free-throws to give the Terriers some life going into the media timeout, down 25-17. Wanink then made three free-throws to cut the lead to five going into halftime, 27-22.
At the media timeout of the 3
rd quarter, the lead for Gardner-Webb was only four, after Wanink hit a triple and a jumper.
Cairo Booker got in on the action as she drove hard to the rim and score a tough layup making the score 34-30. Gardner-Webb would go on a 11-3 run to end the quarter, making the score 45-33.
The Runnin' Bulldogs put on the pressure to begin the 4
th quarter, growing their lead to 15, forcing Wofford to take a timeout with 7:47 remaining. The Terriers tried to pull off the comeback with buckets from
Lawren Cook,
Alexis Tomlin, and
Jamari McDavid, but it was too little too late as the final horn went, Wofford falling to Gardner-Webb 67-53.
"I give Gardner-Webb a ton of credit. They came in here and played a full 40 minutes," said Coach Garrity. "We'll watch the film and learn from this, and it will take our absolute best effort, coming together as a team, to get a win on Sunday."
The Terriers will play their home opener at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium this Sunday, November 17, against Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
