Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced effort leads Wofford to 67-42 victory

Terriers defeat Maryland Eastern Shore on the road

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Wofford men's basketball team capped off its four-game road swing on Tuesday, defeating University of Maryland Eastern Shore 67-42.

The win snaps a four-game skid for the Terriers, moving their overall record to 3-4. Wofford will return home for its next contest, hosting North Carolina Central on Monday, December 2.

"Great team win," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley. "You guys saw the message to our team the last couple of days with our bodies rejuvenated, which was can we put 40 minutes together with defense and rebounding, and I think we did that for the most part."

The Terriers grabbed a season-high 39 rebounds while dishing out 16 assists, holding Maryland Eastern Shore to just 30.8 percent from the floor and allowing just four 3-pointers. Wofford also tied its season-high of nine steals while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and going 13-for-31 from 3-point range.

"They were up on Oklahoma because they made eight threes," McAuley said of Maryland Eastern Shore. "Our goal was six or less threes, and we held them to four. We did a good job of keeping numbers in front and frustrating them, and obviously did a good job on the glass."

Storm Murphy continued his strong play, scoring a game-high 19 points, going 5-for-7 from 3-point range to tie his career-high from behind the arc. Trevor Stumpe and Nathan Hoover each scored 10 points, with Stumpe and Chevez Goodwin posting season highs in rebounds, with seven and nine, respectively.

"Us seniors really wanted to emphasize the last two days in practice that we just needed to put a full game together," Stumpe said. "We did that tonight on offense and defense. For 40 minutes we were the aggressor and I'm just really proud of our guys."

Stumpe got things going with a three, knocking down another to make the score 14-7 just five minutes into the contest. Goodwin scored a pair of buckets in the paint to make the score 19-8 before three 3-pointers pushed the advantage to 13 (27-14) with under seven to play in the half.

"I think he showed his experience tonight," McAuley said of Stumpe. "He came out of the gate and we ran a set for him to see if they switched, they didn't and he banged it home and I thought that really relaxed our guys."

Messiah Jones got into the scorebook with a 3-point play and Murphy drained his third triple of the half to make the score 33-19. Hoover would get a floater to go in the lane as Wofford took a 36-23 advantage into the break.

"In this situation when we are a long way from home, it's really important for us to bring the juice," Stumpe said. "I think we saw that early. We saw a couple shots go, got a couple stops and from there we just kept it up the whole game."

Murphy knocked down an elbow jumper to kick-start things in the second before Tray Hollowell came in and hit a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 18. Hoover connected from downtown then found Stumpe for a trey that made the score 55-32, as the Terriers cruised to the 67-42 win.

"We'll get some workouts in and then let them go to their families and places around town for Thanksgiving meal," McAuley said of the upcoming week. "We'll just enjoy our time together and that's the most important thing. We've got a lot to be thankful for."
