Men's Tennis Claims 4-0 SoCon Victory over Samford

Terriers end three-game losing streak with solid conference win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team found themselves back in the win column on Friday evening, earning their first SoCon win of the year over Samford, 4-0, at the Westside Club indoor courts. Julian Chousa, Omar Williams, and Edu Villar earned their first singles wins in conference to move Wofford to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in league play. Samford drops to 0-1 in conference and 4-6 overall.

"Strong will and determination adequately describe the team's effort," said head coach Rod Ray of the Terriers' first conference win. "Solid doubles and tough singles from Edu, Julian, and Omar kept the pressure and momentum flowing in the right direction."

Omar Williams and Bryce Keim opened doubles play with a win for Wofford in No. 2 doubles, dropping Rossouw Norval and Jack Lyttle, 6-2, for their fifth doubles win of the season.

Julian Chousa and Javi Casasolas followed with their second straight win as a tandem in No. 1 doubles, defeating Sami Kirberg and Daniel Orlita, 6-4, to claim the 1-0 advantage moving into singles play.

Sophomore Edu Villar would bring in the first singles win for the Terriers, picking up his third singles win of the year, 6-2, 6-3, against Kirberg in No. 3 singles.

Junior Julian Chousa then saw his fourth singles victory in No. 1 singles over Norval, 6-2, 6-4, to push a 3-0 lead for the Terriers.

Sophomore Omar Williams would wrap the match up in No. 2 singles, clinching the 4-0 victory with a hard-fought win in the second set, 6-2, 7-5, over Samford's Orlita to give the Bulldogs their first SoCon loss of the year. The win marks Williams' fourth of the season.

The Terriers return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, March 2, hosting undefeated UNC Asheville at Reeves Tennis Center for a competitive matchup that features the No. 1 nationally-ranked doubles duo in the country. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
