Men's Tennis Suffers Loss to Undefeated UNC Asheville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Omar Williams was the lone Terrier to pick up a win on the day, as the Wofford men's tennis team fell 6-1 to the visiting UNC Asheville Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, who feature the No. 1 nationally-ranked doubles pair in the country, took the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to remain undefeated (10-0) on the season. Wofford's record moves to 4-8 overall.

"Asheville has a strong team and they demonstrated that today," said head coach Rod Ray of the undefeated Bulldogs. "I'm proud of the effort from the top of our lineup. We're getting better every week and this week is no exception to that statement."

The Bulldogs would take the doubles point with wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, as the No. 1 nationally-ranked tandem of Henry Patten and Oli Nolan knocked off Julian Chousa and Javi Casasolas (No. 1), 6-2, to bring in the first doubles win.

Bryce Keim and Omar Williams then dropped their match to Olly Cull and Sirawit Daosaengsawang in No. 2 doubles, 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Bulldogs with the 1-0 lead.

Lucas Cerbelli and Diego Losada's match against Quinn Fender and Charlie Morkell in No. 3 doubles went unfinished by the end of the other two matches, 5-3, in Wofford's favor.

UNC Asheville would then claim the first three singles matches to claim the victory early on.

Junior Lucas Cerbelli fell first on the No. 4 court to Daosaengsawang in a competitive 6-4, 6-3 match.

Freshman Bryce Keim (No. 5) forced a tiebreak in the first set against Cull, but ultimately came up short (7-5), going on to drop the second set to move the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0.

UNC Asheville then clinched the win on the No. 6 court, as Casasolas fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Leo Bierbaum.

Sophomore Edu Villar played resilient in No. 3 singles, forcing a tiebreaker set in the second (6-4) after dropping the first to Charlie Morkel. Morkel would, however, finish the match on top, taking the third set 10-7.

Sophomore Omar Williams was the bright spot for the Terriers on the day, picking up his fifth singles win and second straight in No. 2 doubles. After dropping the first set to Nolan, Williams came back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to give Nolan only his second loss of the year.

Julian Chousa fought hard forcing tiebreak games in his matchup with Patten on the No. 1 court, but unfortunately came up short as UNC Asheville would take the 6-1 victory by the match's end.

Next, the Terriers travel to take on UNC Charlotte on Wednesday, March 6, for a 3 p.m. start time.
