SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Down 3-2 with two matches left in singles, sophomores
Javi Casasolas and
Edu Villar both came out victorious in three-set matches to lift Wofford over the Spartans, 4-3, in Greensboro on Saturday afternoon. The wins serve as their fourth and sixth singles victories respectively on the year, as classmate
Diego Losada also brought home a singles win on the day. Wofford moves to 3-2 in the SoCon and 6-10 overall, while the Spartans drop to 4-10 and 1-3 in conference.
Â
The Terriers conquered the doubles point, as Casasolas and
Bryce Keim took down Jack Burkill and Hugh Knapp, 6-3, for their first win together as a pair in No. 2 doubles.
Â
Lucas Cerbelli and
Diego Losada then knocked off Roger Rogowski and Eric Whisnant, 6-4, on the No. 3 court for their third doubles victory of the year, securing the point despite the Terriers' doubles loss shortly after on court one.
Â
The Spartans then came into singles play focused, taking first sets in four of the six singles matches on the day. UNCG's Rogowski tied the match up, dropping Cerbelli on the No. 4 court to start.
Â
Losada answered for the Terriers in No. 6 singles, dominating in his third win of the season in the No. 6 slot over Cooper Wyett in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
Â
With the count at 2-1, the Spartans responded ringing in the next two singles matches in competitive matches on the No. 2 and No. 1 courts to take the lead, 3-2.
Â
Javi Casasolas had took the first set in his matchup with Jack Burkill in No. 5 singles, but Burkill answered taking the second in return. Battling while holding the advantage for a majority of the tiebreaker set, Casasolas eventually would prevail, 7-5, to knot the match at 3-3 with one left.
Â
Edu Villar found himself in similar scenario, though, Villar would fall victim to dropping the first set before going on to claim the second, 6-4. With the match on the line, Villar managed to gut out a 6-3 finish to give the Terriers their third conference win of the season in dramatic fashion, 4-3.
Â
Next, the Terriers will travel to Chattanooga next Saturday, March 30, to take on the Mocs in league action. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
