Women's Tennis Falls to No. 2 ETSU in SoCon Semifinals

2019 Terriers achieve best finish in program history

MACON, Ga. – After a series of rain delays plagued the Macon area for a majority of the day, the third-seeded Wofford women's tennis team fell to No. 2 seed ETSU, 4-1, in the semifinals of the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship. Top-seed Furman and No. 2 ETSU will meet in the women's championship match at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center. The Terriers complete the 2019 season with a 13-8 overall record, tied for the most wins in a season with the '90-'91 and '05-'06 teams, and 4-3 mark in the SoCon, while achieving the team's best finish to a season in program history.

Brittney Wilbur and Curran Carver started things for Wofford in doubles, dropping ETSU's Pascual-Larrinaga and Yunuen Elizarraras, 6-3, on the No. 3 court. Cassidy Hicks and Jenna Vroman then claimed the doubles point for the Terriers with a 6-4 win over Laylo Bakhodirova and Alejandra Morales in No. 1 doubles- their 16th win of the season.

ETSU then kicked things into gear, taking first sets in five of the six matches before claiming the first three singles wins.

The Bucs' Raquel Amaro would start the surge on the No. 4 court, downing sophomore Kay Kluska in straight sets to tie the match up. Elizarraras then downed Wilbur in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1, to claim a 2-1 lead over the Terriers.

Senior Cassidy Hicks saw a competitive matchup in Morales on the No. 2 court. After narrowly falling in the first set (7-5), Hicks would battle hard but unfortunately come up on the losing end of a 6-4 decision in the second set to push a 3-1 lead for ETSU.

Freshman Lilie Steryous also competed hard in No. 3 singles against ETSU's Pascual-Larrinaga, but ultimately came up short in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the 4-1 win for the Bucs and send them to the championship match.

Sophomore Jenna Vroman led the team in singles wins (15) for the second consecutive season, while senior Cassidy Hicks and freshman Lilie Steryous also tallied double-digit singles wins with 11 each on the year. Vroman and Hicks also led the team in doubles for the second consecutive season, setting a program record for doubles wins in a season with 16.

The 2019 Terriers achieved the program's best finish, winning the program's first SoCon quarterfinals match and making the first semifinals appearance while tying for the most wins in a season (13).
