HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (1-4-0) fell to High Point University, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Vert Stadium. Playing in their first true road game since August 30, the Terriers were not able find any momentum on offense as an early goal by the Panthers was enough for High Point to solidify a victory.
Using the support of the home crowd, the Panthers scored the lone goal of the match in the 14
th minute of the contest, which came off the foot of senior Siggi Benonysson. Wofford would respond with shots from
Lucas Altman,
Adrian Roseth and
Young Perry, but were unfortunately turned away as the Terriers could not find the back of the net in the first half. Heading into halftime, High Point lead by a score of 1-0.
Looking to tie the game and force pressure on their opponents, freshman
Alex Dennis notched a shot of his own in the 47
th minute, but Wofford once again could not piece together an effective offensive attack. As the match unfolded, both teams continued to push the tempo as they attempted to find their stride on offense, but neither team would score in the second half as the Panthers went on to defeat the Terriers by a final score of 1-0.
Wofford would be outshot in total, 12-11, but both teams were able to record three shots on goal in the contest. Overall, six different players were able to record shots for the Terriers, including five from Roseth. Dennis, who tallied two total shots on the night, was followed by Altman, Perry, and freshmen
Robert Erlingsson and
Spencer Van Buskirk, who each recorded one shot in the match.
The Terriers will resume play on Saturday, September 21 when they head north to take on UNC Asheville on the road at 7:00 pm. Fans can watch all of the action live at game time on ESPN+. Wofford's next home match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 when they host No. 10 Charlotte at Snyder Field.
