SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team picked up a 49-10 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers scored the first three touchdowns in the game and put up 575 yards of total offense to earn the victory.

Wofford is1-2 overall and Gardner-Webb is 1-3 on the season. The Terriers were led by
Joe Newman with 155 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown.
Blake Morgan added two touchdowns. Kalen Whitlow led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 201 passing yards. Â

"It was a good win and we needed this," said Wofford head coach
Josh Conklin. "We talked all week about needing a statement win – we wanted to play really well on defense and offense. We wanted to execute better than we have been. Our guys have become more comfortable and are coming along. It is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but we are making progress."

The Terriers had the ball to open the game and used a 46-yard run by
Joe Newman to move inside the red zone.
Blake Morgan ran it in from one-yard out for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead at 10:04 in the first quarter. Gardner-Webb had a first down and then converted a fourth-and-one, but a sack by
Jireh Wilson forced a punt. Taking over at the nine-yard line, the Terriers had three first downs before Jaquez Allen went up the middle for a 54-yard touchdown. Wofford had a 14-0 lead with 48 seconds left in the quarter.

On Gardner-Webb's next drive, they had one first down before having to punt. With the ball back,
Joe Newman found
T.J. Luther for a 62-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive. The Terriers had a 21-0 lead at the 13:22 mark of the second quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs had one first down before punting back to Wofford. After a first down, the Terriers fumbled and the ball was recovered by Gardner-Webb. After three first downs, a 32-yard field goal made it a 21-3 score with 4:15 left in the first half. Wofford had three first downs and then
D'mauriae VanCleave ran it in from four-yards out for a 28-3 lead with a minute left on the clock. Gardner-Webb had one first down before the half ended.

To begin the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs used a 41-yard completion to move inside the 20. On fourth-and-two, an incomplete pass turned the ball over to the Terriers. After two first downs, a touchdown by
T.J. Luther was negated by a penalty and Wofford had to punt. The Runnin' Bulldogs had one first down before punting. With the ball back,
Joe Newman had a 54-yard run and he then scored on an eight-yard run for a 35-3 advantage with 14:52 on the clock in the fourth quarter.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had three first downs before an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the ball back to the Terriers. Following a first down run by
Miller Mosley,
Nathan Walker went 56-yards and was tripped up inside the five.
Blake Morgan went in from four-yards out to give Wofford a 42-3 lead with 10:39 left in the game. On fourth down, the punter held onto the ball and was tackled for a loss, with an additional penalty giving the Terriers the ball at the ten.
Peyton Derrick took his first snap of the season and went in for the 10-yard touchdown as Wofford led 49-3 with 8:21 on the clock. An apparent kickoff return for a touchdown was called back due to unsportsmanlike conduct and the Runnin' Bulldogs took over at the 17-yard line. They scored on a pass to Jordan Smith to cut the lead to 49-10 with 6:41 remaining.

With the ball back, Wofford gained two first downs before punting but were able to run four minutes off the clock. Gardner-Webb went three-and-out and punted. The Terriers got the ball back with two minutes left and converted a fourth-and-two to set-up a kneel down to end the game.

Wofford had 575 total yards, with 489 rushing yards. Gardner-Webb had 246 total yards, 237 of which were passing. Wofford had 23 first downs, while Gardner-Webb had 15. Wofford was 4-of-7 on third downs and 1-of-1 on fourth down. Gardner-Webb was 5-of-15 on third down and 1-of-4 on fourth down. Wofford was called for two penalties to three for Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb had a 30:16 to 29:44 time of possession advantage.
