Men’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to No. 10 Charlotte

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (2-5-0) was defeated by No. 10 Charlotte, 3-2, in extra time on Tuesday night at Snyder Field. Both teams would score two goals in regulation to force an extra period, but the 49ers ultimately found the game-winner in the 94th minute to remain undefeated.

Looking to string together a winning streak after blanking UNC Asheville on Saturday, the Terriers jumped on the board first in the 10th minute of the match as freshman Brandon Oddy netted his second goal of the season on an assist from Meade Fowler. Despite being outshot 6-2 in the first half by the 49ers, Wofford's defense would remain steady through the initial 45 minutes as they would deny Charlotte from scoring, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Riding the momentum of the home crowd, the Terriers added to their lead in the 64th minute as freshman Buster Sjoberg scored on a lead pass from sophomore Ade Akinjogbin, pushing the score to 2-0 in favor of Wofford. However, the 49ers would rally back shortly thereafter, cutting their deficit in half on a Teddy Chaouche goal in the 71st minute. Charlotte would continue to force pressure on the Terriers in the following minutes, finding the equalizer in the 76th minute on a goal from Preston Popp. Despite a few more shots from both teams to close out regulation, the match would need extra time to decide the winner.

Wasting little time, the 49ers found the back of the net in the 94th minute as Joe Brito scored his second goal of the season to notch the win, keeping Charlotte undefeated on the year.

Overall, the 49ers outshot the Terriers 14-6 in the overtime thriller. Oddy would pace Wofford's offensive attack with 2 total shots, followed by one shot each from Sjoberg, Fowler, Akinjogbin and freshman Adrian Roseth.

The Terriers will resume play next Tuesday, October 1 as they host Campbell at 7:00 pm at Snyder Field. This match will be streamed live at game time on the Southern Conference Digital Network.
