Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Terriers Celebrate New Year with Convincing Victory

Spartanburg, SC – Wofford's women's basketball team showed they wanted to start 2020 on the right foot with a dominating 48-point victory over Brevard.

The 1st quarter started with two offensive rebounds from Lilly Hatton as she was able to beat her man to the ball and put it off the glass for the opening basket. After a few minutes of limited action, Alea Harris and Chloe Wanink connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put Wofford ahead 10-3. A couple minutes later, Cairo Booker snatched a rebound and went coast-to-coast to make the layup while being fouled, and converted the 3-point play. Jamie Grob ended the 1st quarter scoring for Wofford as she dropped a 10-footer, making the score 18-12 in favor of the Terriers.

Wofford began the 2nd quarter on a 12-0 run which started with Da'Ja Green hitting a triple right in the face of her defender. Hatton drained her shot from beyond the arc, and MaryMartha Turner got in on the action as she swished her three. Green capped off the run with another bucket from downtown for the team's fourth consecutive 3-pointer. The Terriers would go on another run midway through the quarter with Jamari McDavid scoring six points in the span of 50 seconds. McDavid hit a deep jumper to continue the offensive onslaught and Lawren Cook finished the half with a steal and score to put Wofford up 47-22 at the break.

The Terriers had no intention of letting up on the Tornados and they went on a 10-1 run to open the 3rd quarter. Chloe Wanink hit her open three, Cairo Booker had herself another three-point play, Lilly Hatton knocked down her 12-footer, and Jamari McDavid banked it off the window, this all coming within a 1:38 span. With Wofford holding a 32-point lead, Jamie Grob grabbed an offensive rebound and scored an off-balance fade away that erupted the crowd and bench. She followed that up with a layup after a wonderful find from MaryMartha Turner. Grob wasn't done as she ripped down another offensive rebound and found Niyah Lutz for the easy score, giving the team a 38-point cushion going into the final quarter.

The 4th quarter kicked off with two Elena Pulanco steals that resulted in two triples for Niyah Lutz. Lawren Cook then made two buckets of her own to put the Terriers up by 50. Jamie Grob finished her afternoon with her sixth offensive rebound that led to a layup. On the following Tornados possession, Lawren Cook got the rebound and found a streaking Alea Harris for the fast break layup. The Terriers ended the game holding Brevard to only two points in the final 2:50 of play to see themselves to a comfortable 82-34 win.

A very balanced game for Wofford as all 11 players to touch the court scored throughout the game, six of which scored nine or more points. Niyah Lutz, Lawren Cook, and Jamie Grob all proved their worth besides the rim as they combined for 24 of the team's 45 rebounds. Elena Pulanco had a game-high four assists, and Alea Harris and Lawren Cook shared game-high honors with three steals a piece.

"This was a game where we wanted a lot of people to get a lot of minutes and that's exactly what we did. Our defense was really good, and we forced off the ball turnovers and steals that were important to our success throughout the game," said Garrity. "We're really excited to start conference play, our second season if you can call it that, and we can't wait for it to get here."

The Terriers will open up SoCon play as they will host Samford at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for Education Day. Tipoff will be at an early 11:00 a.m.
