CHARLESTON, S.C. – Chevez Goodwin scored a career-high 25 points as the Wofford men's basketball team topped The Citadel 79-56 at McAlister Field House on Wednesday night.
Goodwin was the definition of efficient, going 11-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line while grabbing eight rebounds, with 19 of his 25 points coming in the second half.
"Early on, I definitely benefitted from my teammates who were moving the ball and making shots," Goodwin said of his career-high game. "Later, I started to get in the zone and it felt good. I've been working hard and it's paying off, so I just have to keep it going."
Nathan Hoover had another strong game himself, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Storm Murphy finished with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. As a team, Wofford shot 56.9 percent from the floor, outrebounding the Bulldogs 37-25 while handing out 11 assists and outscoring the opponent 43-26 in the second.
"This is not an easy place to play," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley of The Citadel. "It's not an easy outfit to go against, they switch a lot of things up. But we kind of figured it out at half time and I thought our guys played really well."
With the victory, Wofford now sits at 6-3 in Southern Conference play, improving to 14-8 on the season. The Citadel drops to 6-14 overall and is now 0-9 in the SoCon. Wofford returns home on Saturday, welcoming Samford to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. tip.
"We're still a young ball club trying to figure some things out," said McAuley. "If we could just put two halves together, I'm really excited about what this team can be."
Murphy got rolling early, scoring in the paint, from the elbow and outside as the Terriers jumped in front 17-11. After Wofford pushed the lead to eight, The Citadel scored eight of the next 10 points to make the score 23-21 in favor of the Terriers. Looking to establish some breathing room, Isaiah Bigelow found Messiah Jones for a slam and Hoover scored just before the buzzer as Wofford went into the break leading by six (36-30).
Hoover came out firing in the second, knocking down a three and scoring in the lane as Wofford pushed the advantage to nine. From here, Goodwin began to get into the groove, slamming home a feed, hitting a free throw and converting a turnaround in the lane as the Terriers took their biggest lead of the game (13).
"In the second half, we really committed to feeding the post," McAuley said. "Some of our threes fell, which was nice, but we were more simplistic in terms of taking care of the ball."
The Goodwin show would continue, scoring another pair of buckets and feeding Murphy for a 3-pointer as Wofford went ahead 65-48 with just under seven minutes to play. The team continued to feed the big man, scoring three more times down the stretch to ice the game and give the Terriers the 23-point victory.
"I felt like do a lot of damage down low," said Goodwin. "I didn't even know I had that many points until after, I just wanted to play hard, but it worked out well tonight."
