SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College has announced the 2020 football schedule, which features home games against Southern Conference foes The Citadel, Mercer, VMI and East Tennessee State, along with a road game at South Carolina.
Wofford is looking to continue the success of the 2019 season, in which the Terriers won the Southern Conference Championship for the third straight season. Overall the team was 8-4 overall and 7-1 in league play. The Terriers advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The Terriers will open the season with four straight Southern Conference games for the first time in school history. The slate begins with a visit to Furman on September 5. It will mark the 95
th meeting between the two teams since 1889. They also played the first game of the season in 2017.
On September 12, Wofford will host The Citadel for the home opener at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had won 18 of the last 20 meetings between the two teams, including a 31-11 win in Charleston last season. The Mercer Bears, led by new coach Drew Cronic, will visit Spartanburg on September 19. Wofford has won all six meetings between the teams as members of the Southern Conference. The Terriers travel to Samford on September 26, with the Bulldogs winning the last five games in the series.
South Carolina State will visit Gibbs Stadium on October 3 to complete a home-and-home series that began with a win by the Bulldogs last season in Orangeburg. Wofford will then go to Chattanooga on October 10. Two of the last three meetings between the teams have gone to overtime, including a 35-34 win by Wofford in 2019. The Terriers will host VMI on October 17, as Wofford has won eight straight in the series. The open week will fall on October 24.
A trip to Western Carolina on October 31 is next on the schedule. Wofford has won four straight in the series against the Catamounts. On November 7, the Terriers will visit Gardner-Webb to complete a series in which Wofford has won the last four games. The final league game of the season will be on November 14 when East Tennessee State visits Gibbs Stadium. Wofford has won the last nine games against the Bucs. The regular season will end on November 21 with a trip to South Carolina. The series against the Gamecocks began in 1895 and the teams last met in 2017.
All dates are subject to change. Kick off times and the Southern Conference television schedule will be announced at a later date. Spring practice for the Terriers will begin on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.
