SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball defeated Carver College 111-37 on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers had a 59-10 lead at the half and shot 66.7% for the game as six players scored in double figures.
Wofford begins the season 2-0 and were led by
Nick Pringle with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Storm Murphy added 16 points, while
Sam Godwin (15),
Messiah Jones (14),
David Appelgren (20) and
Tray Hollowell (10) scored in double figures. The Cougars were led by Lawrence Simmons and Bryson Scott with ten points each.
"I was really proud of our guys' mentality coming in here," said head coach
Jay McAuley. "I know Carver had three games this week against Division I opponents and were a little banged up. Our effort and attention to detail both offensively and defensively, along with trying to get the ball in the paint – 84 points in the paint was what we wanted to do. We didn't necessarily do that in the last game. It was a collective team win for us."
The Terriers jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game and held a 25-6 advantage after a layup by
Messiah Jones at the 11:37 mark. Wofford continued the 17-0 run as they held a 32-6 lead before Carver scored off a turnover. The Terriers answered with a 21-0 run to make it a 53-8 score with three minutes remaining in the first half. The Cougars hit a pair of free throws to end the run, but Wofford took a 59-10 lead into the break.
To start the second half, Wofford had a 20-0 run that was highlighted by three-pointers from Trey Hollowell and
B.J. Mack. After the Cougars had three free throws, the Terriers held a 79-13 lead with 14:32 on the clock in the second half. With Wofford leading 86-14, Carver hit their first field goal of the half at the 11:20 mark. The Terriers had a lay-up by
Sam Godwin with 5:33 on the clock to make it a 100-27 game. Carver made three of their last four shots, including a three-pointer at the buzzer for the 111-37 final margin.
Wofford shot 66.7% from the floor. Carver shot 22.4% overall. The Terriers were 6-of-18 from with three, while the Cougars were 6-of-26 from behind the arc. Carver was 9-of-10 from the line while Wofford was 9-of-17 on free throws. The Terriers had a 54 to 14 advantage on the glass and forced 21 turnovers.
The 111 points were the most by the Terriers since a 112-66 win over North Greenville last season (12/13/19). New career scoring marks were set by
Nick Pringle,
Sam Godwin,
Jackson Gore and
David Appelgren in the contest.
The Terriers will host North Carolina Central on Thursday, December 3 at Richardson Indoor Stadium to complete the three-game home stand to begin the season.
