Terriers Secure First Road Win of Season

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Wofford's women's basketball team took home their first road win of the season after taking down High Point. With points coming hard to find in the second half, the Terriers were able to hold on from their first half lead for a 53-50 victory.

After Jamari McDavid won the tip, it only took 15 seconds for Wofford to cash in as Lilly Hatton swished a three-pointer. Jackie Carman added a spin-around jumper and Hatton converted after a nice dish from Niyah Lutz. McDavid scored her first points of the game on a left-handed layup, followed by Helen Matthews scoring a layup of her own, as Wofford led 11-4 at the media timeout. High Point went on a 9-0 run before Alexis Tomlin ended that with a layup. Tomlin put up another two-pointer to level the score 15-15 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Carman scored the first points of the 2nd quarter with a contested layup. Lutz put up another two after coming off a McDavid screen. McDavid flipped a reverse layup for two, and back-to-back strong defensive possessions by the Terriers quickly turned into three points on the other end for Lutz. A 9-2 run by Wofford saw them ahead at the media timeout, 26-19. The Panthers came back on an 8-1 run, but Matthews drove the lane late in the shot clock and bounced in a layup. Tomlin found herself at the line twice and converted 3-4 for a 31-27 lead. Matthews put down three more, rattling a trey off a Lawren Cook feed. Wofford ended the half on a 7-0 run, leading High Point 34-27 at the break.

Jackie Carman made the first bucket for the Terriers in the second half, Helen Matthews added a free-throw, and Jamari McDavid ran around her defender for a layup, bringing the lead to eight. Hard-nose defense from both teams held the score at 41-33 in favor of Wofford at the 3rd quarter media timeout. Out of the timeout, Alexis Tomlin found McDavid all alone for a wide open layup. McDavid scored again late in the quarter from Alea Harris, giving the Terriers a 45-38 lead going into the final frame.

High Point rallied off the first five points before Lilly Hatton made a turn-around jumper. It was tough to find points for both teams, but Wofford held the lead 47-43 with 4:27 remaining. High Point found themselves in foul trouble, but Wofford was unable to get to the free-throw line, and with 1:28 to go it was tied 48-48. McDavid finally connected on a free-throw to give the team the lead. The Panthers were forced to foul which sent Niyah Lutz to the line and she made both for a three point advantage with 24.9 seconds to go. Lutz picked up a loose ball at half court and took it all the way to widen the Terriers' lead to five. Wofford was able to hold onto the ball and run out the clock for a 53-50 win.

Jamari McDavid finished with a tie for game-high points with 13 and also had five rebounds. It was balanced scoring throughout the rest of the lineup with Hatton and Lutz with nine, and Matthews and Tomlin with eight. Tomlin also had a team-high eight rebounds and Jackie Carman snatched six.

"That was a tough one, but we were able to stay strong and together and come out on top", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "We made them take a lot of tough, contested shots, and we were able to get plenty of paint touches and score off them. We took care of the ball and we executed our plays. These are the types of games we need to win, and we did that tonight."

Wofford will be back in North Carolina on Sunday, December 6 when they take on UNC Asheville at 2:00 pm.
